Saint Anselm College, a catholic, liberal arts college in the Benedictine tradition, is seeking a Major Gifts Officer. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Major Gifts and Campaign Director, the Major Gifts Officer is primarily responsible for developing, managing, implementing, and overseeing strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of 120-130 prospective major gift donors. The Major Gifts Officer will create individualized solicitation plans leading to major outright and deferred gifts of $25,000+, integrating unrestricted and restricted gifts, endowment, annual and capital gifts in support of Saint Anselm's fund-raising priorities.

The Major Gift Officer will also play a crucial role in developing and maintaining a collaborative relationship with the Director of a designated School or Institute within the College. This position involves coordinating philanthropic initiatives, identifying and cultivating donor relationships, and facilitating clear communication between the School/Institute and the College's advancement office.

The Major Gifts Officer will serve as a fundraiser for college-wide targeted initiatives and will work closely with colleagues in College Advancement, Dean's, faculty, and senior administrators as appropriate to nurture robust relationships with the College.

Examples of Duties:

  • Advance individual relationships that result in philanthropic contributions: Research, identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward special and leadership gifts from a managed portfolio of 120-130 prospects and donors with capacity to make gifts of $25,000 and more. Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and lifetime-giving potential of individual prospects.
  • Travel & Engagement: Visit 10-12+ donors/prospects monthly along with significant phone, text and email outreach ensuring consistent and appropriate contact, facilitating, or making solicitations and ensuring effective stewardship. There is an expectation of submitting timely contact reports for each visit.
  • Developing and maintaining a collaborative relationship with the Director of a designated School or Institute within the College. Responsibilities include strategic planning for fundraising efforts, event coordination, and working with faculty to highlight projects worthy of support, all aimed at enhancing the School/Institute's philanthropic goals and aligning them with the College's mission.
  • Strategic Communication: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the priorities of the College and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific College needs.
  • Teamwork/Collaboration: Collaborate closely with campus stakeholders to ensure constructive collaboration with fundraising priorities, fostering a cohesive approach toward advancing the College's overarching mission and that translate the College's fund-raising priorities into gift proposals and to advance major gift prospects. Leverage this constructive collaboration to increase alumni participation in fundraising initiatives.
  • Gift Planning: Work with Gift Planning team to identify prospects for bequests and other planned gifts to the College and collaborate on strategy and solicitation of estate gifts.
  • Thorough and Timely Reporting on Activity: Gather, record, and store information about prospects and donors utilizing the College's donor and alumni tracking database.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree required, plus three-plus years of direct and successful development experience in fundraising, which includes a minimum of two (2)-plus years of leadership/major gift experience, preferably in higher education, with a record of closing major gifts.

Strong interpersonal skills are required, both written and oral, and sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings. Must be able to travel to meet with donors and prospective donors to raise money on behalf of the College. Ability to work various hours including nights and/or weekends.
  • Discretion and an ability to interact with high-level donors and the ability to maintain an elevated level of confidentiality.
  • Proven record of accomplishment of successful solicitation and securing major and high-end annual gifts.
  • Ability to be an effective advocate for the College.
  • Ability to be proactive.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with various planned-giving vehicles is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment; Strong oral, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in standard office software tools and applications.
  • Valid US driver's license


This is a full-time, twelve-month, exempt staff position eligible for a hybrid work schedule, including up to two days of remote work per week, in keeping with the College's policy.
