Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Precision Measurements Join to apply for the Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Precision Measurements role at Corning Incorporated. This role broadens and extends Corning’s competency in precision mechanical and metrology system design and development, from engineering prototypes to production systems. The position requires familiarity with opto-mechanical designs, micron and sub-micron metrology principles, instrumentation specifications, error budgets, and measurement uncertainty, and the use of state-of-the-art modeling and analysis software for mechanical, optical, and multi-physics phenomena. Senior Precision Engineers solve complex engineering challenges, mentor junior engineers, and ensure successful project delivery. The role supports projects from concept to manufacturing transfer and promotes precision engineering practices within Corning. Key Responsibilities Interface with Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing teams involved in the innovation and manufacture of new products and processes within Corning’s Advanced Optics’ precision optics, laser optics, and metrology instruments businesses. Lead engineering projects from concept through implementation, ensuring deliverables are met on time and within budget. Collaborate with team members to solve mechanical and metrology problems and to understand project issues and process engineering. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians. Represent the engineering team in client meetings, presentations, and technical discussions. Manage risk assessments and quality assurance processes to ensure system reliability and compliance. Stay updated on cutting-edge technologies and industry trends related to precision engineering. Drive research to improve system accuracy, performance, and efficiency. Develop intellectual property or novel methodologies as needed and document prior art as part of projects. Document project results through internal and external reporting (design reviews, peer reviews, customer presentations, manager reviews, technical reports, publications, etc.). Collaborate during development of new precision instruments, qualification benches, and component designs for multiple departments within Advanced Optics. Estimate time to complete tasks and monitor performance against schedules. Execute project assignments with minimal supervision. Education/Experience Requirements B.S. in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Precision Engineering or related discipline plus 15 years of experience in optics, opto-mechanical design, metrology or related M.S. in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Precision Engineering or related discipline plus 10 years of experience in optics, opto-mechanical design, metrology or related Ph.D. in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Precision Engineering or related discipline plus 6 years of experience in optics, opto-mechanical design, metrology or related Required Skills Technical expertise in precision mechanical design, displacement measurement methods and uncertainty Ability to work in a development environment with evolving requirements Decision making and problem solving using systematic approaches (e.g., performance budgets) Clear communication and ability to present ideas Teamwork and collaboration across departments; adaptability Commitment to task and sense of urgency Planning, prioritizing, and goal setting across multiple projects Desired Skills Knowledge of kinematic design, flexure design, and core precision design concepts (stiffness, stability, reliability) Experience with finite element modeling (mechanical, thermal, fluid, optical) Metrology principles for high-accuracy measurements and measurement uncertainty Mechanical designs for vacuum, fluid, heat transfer, motion systems and controls Material selections and trade-offs for cost, manufacturability, and performance Additional Information This position does not support immigration sponsorship. Salary range: $159,130.00 - $218,805.00 for full-time status. Starting pay depends on location, experience, and education.
