Job SummaryThe Research Laboratory Technologist is a part-time position to support research and bench work laboratory studies of prion disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. Research studies are focused on microbiome research across cultures and studies to monitor agitation in patients more accurately using wearable devices. Bench studies involve supporting research being done on prion diseases and Alzheimer’s Disease. Goals of the studies are primarily focused on the nature of prion disease pathology and the development of therapies, such as RNAi, gene splicing modification, and dominant‑negative inhibition of disease in animal models of prion disease. Responsibilities Handle small rodents (mice and hamsters), PCR genotyping to maintain several transgenic mouse lines. Perform western blots, real‑time RT‑PCR, cloning, restriction enzyme digestion, sequencing of human DNA samples, cell cultures, cell transfections. Maintain a laboratory database and perform routine laboratory maintenance (ordering supplies, etc.). Guide participants in such studies, packaging and mailing kits to patients for recovery of biological samples (microbiome), and assist with a study that uses a wearable device to monitor agitation in patients with dementia. Maintain technical and administrative support for a research project. Analyze and maintain data and/or specimens. Conduct literature reviews. Assist with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents. Perform other related work as needed. Education and Qualifications Minimum QualificationsCollege or university degree in a related field.Less than 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field. Previous laboratory experience. Experience with a broad range of scientific techniques. Knowledge in relevant scientific field. Analytical skills. Problem‑solving skills. Attention to detail. Organizational skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
