Substitute School Nurse

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To maintain health of school population so that they may attain maximum education

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Provide emergency first aid and medical service for students, staff and visitors

2.Dispensing of prescribed medication to the students and staff

3.Assists physician in conducting physicals for sophomore students, sports physicals, special areas and selective staff members

4.Ensure follow-up with parents or guardians of students with any unusual health findings and upon request participates in counseling of health problems

5.Communicates health problems of students such as neglect, drug abuse, communicable disease, nutrition or adolescent pregnancy to proper agencies and/or staff for referrals in order to provide optimum health services for students

6.Performs scoliosis screening and reports this information as required by the State of Massachusetts

7.Performs selective vision and hearing tests

8.Participates in Core Evaluations

9.Counseling of students, parents and staff concerning health and safety problems

10.Records data and maintains up-to-date school health records, including immunization reports as required by the State of Massachusetts

11.Records monthly and yearly data of health problems and accidents in order to research and evaluate problems and to maintain a safe and healthy environment

12.Participate in school programs and activities such as drug abuse, alcohol awareness, disease education and also serves on advisory committees

13.Performs select procedures for handicapped students

14.Provides literature to students and staff on current health topics

15.Maintains inventory and orders supplies needed for health services
