HIRING RANGE FOR THIS POSITION IS BETWEEN $27.66/HR AND $33.19/HR BASED ON EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS. Position Overview The Assistant County Surveyor will work under the direction of the County Surveyor to assist with surveying projects and provide support in managing and maintaining the county’s land and property records, infrastructure surveys, and boundary determinations. This role involves conducting fieldwork, assisting in technical surveying tasks, and ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations The ideal candidate will have a strong background in surveying techniques, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and be comfortable with both office and field-based duties. Key Responsibilities Survey Support Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of land and property surveys for public works projects, infrastructure developments, road construction, and boundary line determinations. Fieldwork Conduct field surveys to gather data on land features, property boundaries, elevations, and infrastructure details using various survey instruments such as total stations, GPS systems, and level instruments. Data Collection and Analysis Collect and process survey data, including field notes, sketches, and measurements. Analyze survey data and assist in the preparation of maps, plats, and reports. GIS Integration Assist with the integration of survey data into the county’s GIS system to produce accurate maps and spatial data for use in planning, development, and other county operations. Documentation & Record Keeping Maintain accurate and organized survey records, including field notes, survey drawings, and reports. Ensure all records are compliant with county, state, and federal regulations. Assist with Public Inquiries Respond to public inquiries regarding land surveys, property boundaries, and other survey-related matters. Provide technical assistance to other county departments, agencies, and the general public. Compliance and Quality Assurance Ensure that all surveying activities comply with local, state, and federal laws and standards. Help ensure the accuracy, reliability, and quality of all survey data. Project Coordination Assist in coordinating and managing various surveying projects from start to finish, including scheduling, coordination with other departments, and ensuring project timelines are met. Training and Mentoring Assist in the training and supervision of junior staff or survey technicians as needed. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally. See well enough to operate vehicles and survey equipment, read instructions and follow directions; hear well enough to distinguish mechanical noises, to converse on the radio, telephone and in person; physical mobility to walk, bend, stand, crouch or climb for extended periods of time; ability to operate survey equipment; use hands and fingers for writing, typing, drafting, manipulating precision tools and equipment and other computer related functions; able to lift equipment as necessary; able to tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing essential functions and be able to lift equipment as necessary. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS Duties may require work in both climate-controlled indoor environments and outdoor locations exposed to varying weather conditions. Fieldwork may involve standing for long periods, walking considerable distances over harsh terrain. SAFETY EQUIPMENT & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) Employees are required to adhere to all safety protocols and utilize appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided to ensure a safe working environment. Specific requirements include: Mandatory PPE: Employees must wear designated PPE, which may include safety goggles, gloves, hard hats, and safety vest depending on the tasks performed. Safety Training: All employees will receive training on the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment and PPE to minimize risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Inspection and Maintenance: Employees are responsible for regularly inspecting their PPE for wear and tear, and reporting any damaged equipment to their supervisor for replacement. Emergency Equipment: Familiarity with the location and use of emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and eyewash stations, is required. Associate’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field required. Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or a related discipline preferred. Minimum of 5 years experience in surveying and mapping and a minimum of two years experience as an AUTOCAD Civil 3D draftsperson along with 2 years as field crew supervisor or office manager in responsible charge of field activities as it relates to survey and mapping. Certification as a Survey Party Chief or Survey Technician (e.g., through NSPS, ASCM, or state certification programs) is preferred. Proficiency with survey equipment, survey software and Microsoft Office Suite. In-depth knowledge of surveying techniques, equipment, and software (such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble, Leica, or similar platforms). Thorough understanding of mapping and drafting techniques. Strong understanding of local, state, and federal survey regulations, including boundary laws, land use regulations, and public works processes. Strong leadership and team management abilities with ability to work both independently and as part of a team, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with crew members, clients, and other project stakeholders, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in survey data. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and lift survey equipment as necessary. Must maintain valid Florida drivers license with good driving record. Pay Grade G11 Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
