Staff Software Engineer, Storage – Google About The Job Google’s software engineers build technologies that power billions of users. The Platforms Storage team creates storage solutions for services such as AI/ML, Cloud, Search, Photos, YouTube and more. As a Staff Engineer you will design, develop, and maintain firmware, kernel drivers, system software, and tools that enable efficient, scalable, and secure storage for Google’s infrastructure. Minimum qualifications Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience. 8 years of programming experience in C++. 5 years of experience testing and launching software products. 5 years building large‑scale infrastructure, distributed systems, or network technology. 3 years of software design and architecture. Experience with low‑level software: C, kernel, firmware, or similar, including design, development, testing, debugging and deployment. Preferred qualifications Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field. 8 years of data structures/algorithms experience. 3 years technical leadership, leading project teams and setting technical direction. 3 years with Python, SQL or scripting languages. 3 years working on cross‑functional, cross‑business projects. Experience with storage systems, kernel drivers, embedded systems, SSDs, performance analysis and optimization. Responsibilities Lead design, development, and deployment of scalable SSD‑based storage systems. Coach and influence a distributed team of engineers, ensuring high quality and velocity. Align cross‑team goals, outcomes, and timelines, and clearly communicate priorities to stakeholders. Anticipate technical and operational challenges and drive resolutions. Identify and drive innovation opportunities in the storage domain, influencing executive leadership and energizing peers. Google is a proud equal opportunity employer.
