Overview Our Store Managers are passionate leaders that showcase our coffee and complete the story that starts on far‑flung farms across the globe. The Store Manager is responsible for the overall success of our cafes. They hire and build strong teams and are focused on training and supporting each team member. They are responsible for creating exceptional hospitality and coffee experiences and for leading the cafe to achieve our financial and operational goals. Responsibilities Oversee daily operations, including customer service, beverage preparation and presentation, merchandising, and workflow. Supervise staff and ensure that the store is properly staffed at all times, including properly scheduled daily leadership support. Ensure scheduling practices comply with Berkeley Fair Workweek requirements, including advance posting of schedules, predictability pay, and offering additional hours to current employees before hiring externally. Responsible for daily back‑of‑house operations including scheduling, ordering, banking, recruitment, timesheets, and inventory. Remain knowledgeable and educate staff and customers on current product offerings including beans, drinks, food, and merchandise. Oversee all ordering, including coffee, milk, pastries, inventory, etc. Monitor and analyze store performance and take action to improve results. Uphold and follow all health, food safety, and safety guidelines, including compliance with Alameda County Environmental Health requirements and maintaining readiness for inspections. Adhere to and ensure accountability around company policies, including but not limited to cash handling, product standards, safety standards, cleanliness standards, facility maintenance, and hospitality best practices. Maintain compliance with local labor laws, including Berkeley minimum wage, scheduling, and lactation accommodation requirements. Regularly review financial results, identifying and driving changes needed to improve financial performance. Provide feedback to the team in a constructive manner. Coach the Store Educator and Shift Leads on feedback best practices and follow‑up. Implement progressive discipline guidelines when necessary. Foster open communication, addressing concerns proactively and in partnership with People Operations. Approve timecards, edit timecards, adjust tip sheets, and coordinate with People Operations when payroll responsibilities are complete. Partner with the Retail Leadership Team to ensure proper and thoughtful trainings are scheduled for all employees. Maintain shift flow by delegating tasks (cleaning, stocking, prepping) and ensuring the team remains focused on customer support and sales. Remain aware of staffing needs while keeping staffing levels within budget. Work collaboratively with People Operations to interview and onboard new employees. Conduct monthly inventory as assigned. Respond to customer and staff inquiries with patience, confidence, and professionalism. Support sustainability and waste‑reduction practices, including recycling and composting compliance. Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities) Excellent communication and coaching skills. A demonstrated passion for coffee. 2+ years of retail or hospitality experience, specialty coffee preferred. 1+ years of retail management experience leading a team of 10+ people. Demonstrated ability to lead welcoming, inclusive teams and serve a diverse community. Sets the tone for the team by practicing and upholding a positive and solution‑oriented attitude. Understanding of sales, profit and loss, and impact on overall store goals. Familiarity with Berkeley labor standards (including Fair Workweek practices and minimum wage compliance) or willingness to learn. Physical Demands & Work Environment Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, including weekends and shift coverage. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and stand for 8+ hours. Ability to maneuver effectively around the cafe, office, and to/from other Sightglass locations for departmental meetings.
