The Assistant Cook supports the Head Cook manage the kitchen operations, food orders, and prepares meals as outlined by the menu and Head Cook. Assists in distribution and serving of meals to satellites with attention to detail for food allergies and food temperatures.

  • Assist in preparing delicious, attractive, nutritious meals to approximately 175 -200 seniors three days a week.
  • Checks portion control, cooks with emphasis in proper food temperatures and nutrition record keeping.
  • Cooks a variety of foods, bakes and serves foods including entrees, prepare salads, vegetables, and meats.
  • Knowledge and ability to prepare meals to meet Department of Environmental Health (DEH) standards and S.D. County Aging & Independence Services standards.
  • Sets up food counters with prepared foods; properly stores food and does necessary cleanup;
  • Assist in monthly menu preparation.
  • Have a working knowledge of nutrition, portion control, food cost control, and working within a budget.
  • Must be able to pass Food Handler's card test and be knowledgeable in health and sanitation issue related to kitchen work.
Conduct food inventory and maintain accurate record of food on hand. Ability to step in as primary cook when head cook is unavailable. Ability to follow directions and work independently as needed. Assist in conducting inventory and creating food orders weekly. Attends all staff meetings, department/site specific meetings and any other internal and/or external meetings as directed by supervisor. Assists in the maintenance of department areas when needed and ensure compliance with the department directives and policies on cleaning and sanitation of kitchen. As well as San Ysidro Health's policies and procedures relative to infection control, exposure control, and safety issues. Demonstrates teamwork and commitment by:
    • Stepping into other roles when necessary; take initiative as needed.
    • Covers for peers as needed and/or; take on multiple roles when short staffed or necessary.
  • Travels to other locations to provide coverage and/or complete required job duties when needed.
  • Understands and works Saturdays and extended hours if schedule changes and cooperates with all schedule changes.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Be able to participate in San Ysidro Health's events and community events such as health fairs, fundraisers, etc. as delegated by direct supervisor. Health fairs and events may include before and after normal working hours.
  • Demonstrates adequate care and responsibility for equipment. Reports and/or repairs missing or damaged equipment and supplies.
  • Follows administrative chain of command.


Safety:
  • Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures as they relate to safe work practices.
  • Follow all safety procedures and report unsafe conditions.
  • Use appropriate body mechanics to ensure an injury free environment.
  • Be familiar with location of nearest fire extinguisher and emergency exits.
  • Follow all infection control procedures including blood-borne pathogen protocols and Mountain Health's injury and illness prevention program.
  • Follow all Health Department and San Diego County Food Safety guidelines.
  • Participates in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program and follows guidelines that promote workplace safety.
  • Injury Prevention Equipment and/or Personal Protective Equipment may include but not limited to the following:
    • Clinical - Gloves, Goggles, Gowns, Face Shields, and N95 Respirator Masks
    • IT - Gloves, Goggles, Face Shields, and N95 Respirator Masks
    • Facilities- Gloves, Goggles, Gowns or Protective Suits, Face Shields, and N95 Respirator Masks
    • Administration - Gloves, Goggles, Face Shields, and N95 Respirator Masks
Job Requirements:

Education Required (Minimum level of education):
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Certifications/Licenses Preferred:
  • Current CPR Certificate (American Heart Association)
  • Food Handlers Card
Experience Required (Minimum level of experience):
  • Minimum of 1 year of cooking experience

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normal kitchen environment. See, hear, talk, walk, stand for long periods of time, reach, bend, stoop, lift up to 35 lbs. Repetitive hand movement; use and view PC; use calculator; telephone, operate fax, and copy machine. Read and write; time management, interpersonal, organizational, and basic math skills; analyze, research, prioritize, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality. Have reliable transportation; clean driving record and insurance as required by the state. Yearly Physical and TB test. MMR and completion of HEP B series. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered.
