The Opportunity: The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) is seeking two (2) part-time expert level Criminal Justice Trainer candidates to fill a Criminal Justice Trainer 4 position through a Tandem Job Share arrangement. This is an opportunity designed to support work–life balance while maintaining excellence in training delivery. As part of the Basic Training Division (BTD) and under the direction of the Commander and Assistant Commander, this role plays a vital part in advancing WSCJTC’s mission. This position serves as a law enforcement training subject matter expert and delivers Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA) training. This work ensures that BLEA students receive the legal, ethical, evidence-based training required of Washington’s law enforcement professionals. Duties Include (but are not limited to): Serve as a subject matter expert liaising with the Curriculum Unit and other internal partners during curricular updates. Lead training of other trainers ensuring consistency of agency approved training delivery. Mentors, guides, trains, and oversees contract instructors to include: Support contracted TAC Officers and Trainers with day-to-day questions, issues, and tasks by providing direct assistance, guidance, and instruction as is necessary. Support contracted TAC Officers in leading academy classes. Oversee onboarding and training for part-time contractors. Provide feedback to Command staff used for review of prospective contract applicant knowledge, skills, and experience. Audits training delivered by part-time contractors to ensure standards are met. Provides information on agency processes, when necessary. Facilitate instruction in multiple subject areas, disciplines, and using varying methods to include classroom, practical, and mock scenarios. Train and mentor students guided by WSCJTC agency values. Maintain order within the academy atmosphere in accordance with agency policies, procedures, and regulations, including encouraging classes as a group and students individually. Communicate with students’ employing agencies regarding performance, attendance, coordination of additional training needs, test failures and remedial training. Proctors, grades and records scores for examinations. Model trustworthy behavior to support the ideal of officers who earn the trust of their communities. Reinforce and demonstrate ethical and professional behaviors. Sits on oral boards to assist in selection of new MOU TAC staff. Serves as a hiring panel member for training positions within the Basic Training Division or others per request. Required Qualifications/Experience: At least fifteen (15) years of experience in law enforcement in an assignment that may require the application of physical force. AND At least five (5) years of leadership experience as a lead, supervisor, and/or full-time trainer of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections). Serving as a lead trainer/TAC Officer/FTO or PTO meet this requirement. -OR - At least three (3) years of leadership experience as a lead, supervisor, and/or full-time trainer of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections). Serving as a lead trainer/TAC Officer/FTO or PTO meet this requirement. AND A bachelor’s degree in the areas of criminal justice, public administration, business administration, psychology, sociology, adult education, or related field. Experience with curriculum development and/or delivery in the subject areas of de-escalation, patrol tactics, criminal law, criminal procedures, control/defensive tactics, less lethal weapons, firearms, and/or control/defensive tactics. An understanding of adult teaching and learning methods Ability to successfully complete WSCJTC Instructor Development - (ID2) within the first three (3) months of hire. No sustained use of force complaints in the past three (3) years Any community complaints in the last three (3) years must be satisfactorily explained Able to model the Guardian Philosophy of policing in class on a daily basis Strong work ethic, self-directed, and able to work in a team-teaching environment Ability to support the agency's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals Effective communication skills Preferred/Desired Qualifications: Understanding of and/or experience with WSCJTC protocols and chain of command. Middle management experience (examples: lieutenant/captain, second line supervisor). Program or project management. WSCJTC Instructor Development - 2 (ID2) certification. Skills for basic computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with curriculum development and instruction principles, content and methodology High level problem solving skills, including the ability to analyze, synthesize information, and recommend short and long term strategies for improvement. Knowledge of and experience with the criminal justice system including federal, state, and local criminal justice agencies, laws, ordinances and regulations Demonstrated knowledge of cultural diversity/implicit bias Demonstrated experience controlling/monitoring equipment and resources.
