We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate part-time Cook to join our team at The Salvation Army Emergency Shelter. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys creating delicious and nutritious meals and wants to help make a difference in the lives of our residents.

Rate of Pay: $14.00 per hour

Responsibilities:

  • Meal Preparation: Prepare and cook high-quality, nutritious meals for shelter residents, ensuring dietary needs and preferences are met. Comply with state and/or local health regulations in the operation of the kitchen.
  • Menu Planning: Collaborate with the Food Programs Coordinator to plan balanced and varied menus that incorporate fresh, seasonal ingredients.
  • Food Safety: Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, adhering to all food safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Inventory Management: Monitor food inventory levels, assist with ordering supplies, and ensure proper storage and labeling of ingredients.
  • Serving: Serve meals to residents in a respectful and friendly manner, fostering a welcoming and supportive dining environment.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with shelter staff and volunteers to ensure efficient meal service and address any dietary concerns.

What are We Looking For?

  • Previous experience as a cook in a commercial kitchen or similar environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Ability to plan and prepare meals for large groups.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassionate and empathetic nature, with a desire to support individuals in need.

The Quincy Area Command serves Adams, Pike and Brown counties in Illinois and Marion, Ralls, Lewis, Shelby and Monroe counties in Missouri as well as transients who have come to our community and find themselves in a homeless situation. It is the goal of our program to equip our residents with the knowledge and life skills development needed to find employment and suitable, affordable housing that they might become self-sufficient individuals.

The Emergency Shelter can accommodate up to 20 people with rooms dedicated to single men and women as well as families. The building also includes our Family Services programs and Food Pantry/Breadline.
