Principal Software Engineer Location: Houston, TX Pay Base pay range: $135,000 – $150,000 per year. Expected salary variables based on experience. Primary Purpose A Principal Software Engineer is a hands‑on subject matter expert responsible for overall software design of many components within systems and lead technical implementation of multiple initiatives. The role covers operational application production support across portfolios, thrives in fast‑paced environments, and collaborates with cross‑functional teams. Primary Duties and Accountabilities Drive multiple projects to delivery, removing obstacles to ensure success. Provide technology production support for high business‑value applications across portfolios. Develop architecture and design of large‑scale distributed software services and solutions. Drive improvements to software engineering practices. Prioritize technology investments to balance short‑ and long‑term goals. Collaborate with teams across Constellation to achieve goals, promote collaboration, mentor and develop other engineers. Keep up to date with industry trends and apply to projects as appropriate; identify investments needed to improve experience through data‑driven approach. Provide coaching/mentorship for IT personnel; promote diversity, equity, inclusion and foster teamwork and learning organization. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in IT/Computer Science or Engineering and at least 8–10 years of experience in technical specialty. 10+ years of IT application production support experience across portfolios in an operational environment servicing enterprise‑level users. 10+ years of software design and development experience with backend and database services (SQL/NoSQL databases). 9–12 years of hands‑on experience in object‑programming languages (Python, Perl, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, NodeJS, .NET, HTML, AngularJS, iOS Swift, Objective‑C, Android Mobile, Xamarin). Experience with migrating workloads from on‑prem to cloud such as GCP. 3+ years architecting distributed systems. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and excellent interpersonal collaboration skills. Preferred Qualifications Hands‑on experience with Azure Cloud and cloud‑native architecture. Proven ability to design and implement microservices and containerized solutions using Docker/Kubernetes. Expertise in CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for automated deployments. Strong background in distributed systems architecture and high‑performance application design. Solid understanding of Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and experience driving process improvements. Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead technical initiatives across teams.
