Position Summary Nursing Station Clerks 1 are assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. The team member greets visitors and directs them to appropriate locations, answers telephones, performs data entry activities, maintains daily and clinical logs, and prepares, updates, and maintains patient charts and files. Responsibilities also include filling out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions, mailing patient letters, and delivering supplies and records to an assigned unit. Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, knowledge of patient care, and the ability to respond to changing patient needs by making decisions based on ethical principles while adhering to a high standard of excellence. Responsibilities Oriented patients and/or families to the unit, providing general information regarding the room, unit, and hospital and serving as a contact person. Gave information on patient condition within existing policies and directed visitors to appropriate locations. Processed physicians' orders by recording written orders in charts, Kardex, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a Registered Nurse; also filled out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions. Received new admissions. Prepared and maintained patient charts, daily log, and clinic log. Qualifications Eligible List Appointment: Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for Nursing Station Clerk 1. If on the list, one must complete and return the canvass letter as instructed. Provisional Appointment: If no eligible list of three or more candidates willing to accept a position, a temporary provisional appointment may be considered. Provisional candidates must have one year of full‑time clerical, secretarial, or patient care experience in a health care setting and must take the examination for Nursing Station Clerk 1 when next offered; they must also be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment. 55b/c Appointment: This position may be 55b/c designated and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications and a current 55b/c eligibility letter. Section 70.1 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a title approved for transfer to Nursing Station Clerk 1.
