Senior Data Scientist – Caterpillar Inc. Job Overview: This role involves working as a technical lead in a team of data scientists and software developers to support the development, integration, and enhancement of Caterpillar’s analytics, AI, and Generative AI projects and products. Career Area Technology, Digital and Data Job Summary As a Senior Data Scientist, you will design, develop, and deploy machine learning, AI, and Generative AI solutions that solve complex business challenges while collaborating closely with cross‑functional teams. What You Will Do Develop ML/AI/GenAI models and solutions. Gather, mine, and process large volumes of data; create appropriate data models. Apply ML/AI/GenAI and statistical methods to solve business problems. Research data model optimization and algorithms to improve analysis accuracy. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including outside IT. Participate in 1–2 concurrent projects. Maintain a strong focus on continual learning in analytics. What You Have Analytical Thinking – extensive knowledge of analytical techniques and tools. GenAI / AI / Machine Learning – experience and knowledge of principles, technologies, and algorithms. Statistics – extensive knowledge of statistical tools and practices for business decisions. Programming – proficiency in Python (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, etc.) and related tools. Information Processing – processing large quantities of detailed information accurately. Databases – writing, debugging, and implementing complex queries across multiple tables. Presentation Skills – strong communication and presentation abilities. Top Candidates Will Also Have Degree in statistics, economics, mathematics, or related quantitative field (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D.). Professional experience: 5+ years with a Master’s or 2+ years with a Ph.D.; equivalent with a Bachelor’s. Experience in regression, hypothesis testing, ANOVA, statistical process control, etc. Practical ML techniques such as clustering, logistic regression, CART, random forests, SVM, or neural networks. Continuous learning evidence in analytics. Broad knowledge of statistical/digital methods solving business problems. Experience connecting data from multiple business domains and providing forecasts/insights. Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). Version control experience (GitHub). Agile work experience. Strong initiative, interpersonal skills, and effective communication.
