SENIOR TRANSPORTATION PLANNER – Caltrans District 3 Job Posting Details Job Code: JC-499332 Position: Branch Chief, Transit Grants & Planning Branch Salary: $8,678.00 – $10,783.00 per month Location: 111 Grand Ave., Oakland, Alameda County Work Type: Permanent, Full Time Telework: Hybrid Final Filing Date: 11/30/2025 Responsibilities Under the direction of the Office Chief of Transit & Active Transportation, the Senior Transportation Planner, as the Branch Chief, is responsible for planning and directing the work of Transportation Planners/Associate Transportation Planners engaged in administering Federal Transit Administration (FTA) programs, successful planning, execution, and closeout of State and Federal funded rail and transit projects, and general transit planning and coordination functions for the District. Administrative duties include the distribution of resources and workload, coordination with District Transit Coordination functions, tracking expenditures, dealing with personnel issues, staff development, and other related activities. The role requires strong leadership, communication, partnership, and strategic thinking skills, as well as a deep commitment to the Department's strategic vision, mission, values, and goals, and to advancing equity through all efforts. Minimum Requirements Eligible for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Planner exam. Candidates who do not have current eligibility and/or who will be new to state civil services employment must be on the state examination list to be eligible. Refer to the Class Specification for detailed minimum qualifications. Special Requirements Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required. The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages, 12‑point Arial font. Each question must be numbered and addressed in the same order as the questions below. Qualify by providing a transcript and/or official degree evaluation if foreign credentials are used. Please describe: your experience with administering state and federal transit grants or other transportation programs; your experience with rail, transit, and/or multimodal planning and coordination; your management experience, including direct supervision, overseeing work of others, and/or serving in a team‑lead capacity.
