Swiss Machinist

The Swiss Machinist sets up, operates, and tends Swiss machines to pierce, cut, and drill or otherwise shape or cut metal or plastic materials, such as wire, rod, or bar stock. The Swiss Machinist controls machines and processes; inspects equipment, structures or material; reads work orders and blueprints; evaluates work order information to determine completeness and takes initiative to seek additional information as needed; determines the most effective and efficient method, approach and tools to complete the work; handles/moves materials, tools and equipment; troubleshoots issues; and ensures that completed work meets required specifications. This work requires a high degree of attention to detail and precision, as the Swiss Machinist is responsible for maximizing set up efficiency and machine run time, minimizing machine downtime, and crafting high quality finished parts that meet or exceed industry expectations. The Swiss Machinist is also responsible for ongoing learning and sharing knowledge and expertise with co-workers.



Print reading, geometric dimension and tolerance system
Mathematics: adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry, algebra, trigonometry
CNC machines: designs, uses, capabilities, limitations, and maintenance
Tools: specific capabilities and limitations; step-overs; tool paths
Tool holders and part fixturing (center finders, edge finders, probes)
Boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines
Measuring devices: calipers, micrometers, others
Material: properties/cutting dynamics, including proper speeds and feeds
Post work processing and finishing, including effects of post-processing and finishing operations
Shop operations/systems: material stock and labeling, shipping prep, chip management, waste handling
Standard operating procedures; safety protocols and practices



Calculate dimensions or tolerances, including allowances for coatings or plating, when needed
Use/interpret computer aided manufacturing software (CAM/CAD) and programming language (G-Code)
Use/interpret CNC controls
Read/interpret blue prints
Operate computers and effectively manage files
Monitor and control operations
Perform quality control: test and inspect parts using instruments such as micrometers or calipers



Utilize three-dimensional thinking/spatial orientation skills to visualize and conceive most efficient and effective process for making parts
Cross-check actual standard operating procedures against written orders
Exercise problem sensitivity: anticipate when something is wrong or likely to go wrong
Focus: maintain concentration on a task over time with attention to detail and accuracy
Engage with multiple streams of work simultaneously
Stand on shop floor continually or almost continually; perform repetitious movements
Use hands to handle, control, or inspect objects, tools, or controls
Demonstrate commitment to the organization and its customers
Be dependable and reliable
Take initiative, self-disciplined self-starter, work independently
Manage one’s time effectively and professionally
Continue to learn and develop knowledge and skills
Demonstrate passion for making high quality parts; take pride in one’s work

This work requires a high school diploma and quality, fully involved job shadowing with an expert and/or previous work experience with a range of machines, materials, and machining practices, including process development, programming, and machining. A relevant two-year trade school diploma is a plus.
