Job Summary The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Ophthalmology. This position is responsible for the growth and development of clinical, research, and teaching excellence within the department. The Chair reports to the Dean and serves as the department’s academic and administrative leader, providing direction in educational programs, faculty recruitment, retention and development, budget management and oversight, and strategic planning. The Chair also maintains strong collaborative ties with basic science faculty as a key partner in the Vision Discovery Institute, a hub for interdisciplinary vision research. Responsibilities Demonstrate a leadership style centered on faculty success across clinical, research, and education missions. Maintain strong commitment to departmental and institutional leadership, thinking strategically while executing tactically to achieve departmental goals. Build consensus and lead transformative change. Serve as a trusted steward and advocate, guiding the department’s continued growth, innovation, and impact. Communicate vision and inspire others; embody transparency, professionalism, an ethical compass, and foster inclusivity and interdisciplinary collaboration. Mentor and develop faculty and fellows, supporting multidisciplinary efforts, strengthening relationships and aligning stakeholders. Ensure patient satisfaction, quality and safety, meeting clinical service needs of Wellstar MCG Health while advancing academic and research missions. Expand access and capture market share by extending services to new and existing communities. Key Goals / Objectives Responsible for education, clinical and research missions of the department. Lead efforts in building cross‑disciplinary programs. Support and develop departmental education and research programs. Oversee recruitment, retention and professional development of departmental faculty. Cultivate local, statewide and national relationships. Oversee departmental administrative and budgetary operations. Required Qualifications MD, DO, MD/PhD or DO/PhD degree with current American Board of Ophthalmology certification. Eligibility for licensure in Georgia. Academic accomplishments meriting appointment as professor. Senior‑level faculty with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or equivalent. National reputation as an academic leader with strong commitment to research. Experience in development and implementation of new clinical programs and services. Track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees and students. Strong managerial record: ability to grow revenues, meet budgets and improve productivity and outcomes. Commitment to mentoring and faculty development. Track record of collaboration across clinical disciplines and senior management. Ability to drive philanthropic activities. Commitment to community outreach and promoting ophthalmologic care. Commitment to advancing research initiatives, including fellowship programs and collaborations with basic scientists. Shift / Salary / Benefits Fiscal year based position, full‑time (1.0 FTE), year‑round. Rank and salary determined at hire based on experience, education, credentials, specialty, training and internal equity and market data.
