Overview New York State Senator James Sanders, Jr. seeks a Legal Counsel in his Albany office. The Legal Counsel will provide essential legal support and advice to Senate members and staff. Responsibilities Offer legal guidance to Senate members and staff on legislative matters. Interpret laws, regulations, and policies relevant to Senate operations. Draft, review, and assess legislation, bills, and resolutions for legal implications and compliance. Represent the Senate in legal proceedings as necessary. Coordinate with external legal counsel on complex legal issues. Contribute to developing policies and procedures within the Senate. Ensure Senate practices align with legal standards and best practices. Prepare briefing materials for the Senator and staff on legislation, policy initiatives, and regulatory changes. Assist Senator in preparation for public hearings, roundtable discussions, forums, and other public meetings and events. Work with Albany and statewide staff to draft and analyze legislation and policy. Meet with and build relationships with relevant stakeholders, advocacy, and constituency groups. Qualifications Juris Doctor degree. Three to five years of legal counsel and research experience. Strong writing and oratory communication skills. Must be willing to live and work in the Albany Capital Region. Availability for nights and weekends as required. Salary $65,000 - $75,000 per year.
