OverviewDepartment Summary The Department of Public Health and Recreation (PHR) at SJSU is a multidisciplinary academic department that awards B.S. degrees in Public Health and Recreation, and a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. The PHR Department is one of the largest departments within the College of Health and Human Sciences. The department offers a general Bachelor’s degree in Public Health and two concentrations: Community Health Education and Population Data Science. Our graduate program is an MPH degree with a specialization in Community Health Education. A summary of course descriptions for the undergraduate and graduate public health programs can be found in the online SJSU catalog. In the PHR Department, our faculty strive to offer students high quality learning experiences that are rooted in hands-on, applied learning. We aim to recruit new faculty who share our commitment to student centered learning, academic success, and professional and workforce development. ResponsibilitiesTeach courses in undergraduate and/or graduate Public Health programsParticipate in ongoing assessment of student learning to continuously improve teaching and learning experiences and to adhere to accreditation requirementsWork collaboratively with colleagues on public health curriculum-related processes such as teaching multi-section courses to ensure the quality, rigor, relevance, and consistency of our curriculaAttend team meetings and training sessions as requiredEstablish and maintain a high quality learning environment that is inclusive, student-centered, and contemporarily relevantUtilize the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their (campus, remote, and hybrid) classesThe candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid). Required QualificationsMaster’s degree in public health or closely related fieldMinimum two years’ professional experience in public health or closely related fieldCommitment to teaching excellence in public health-related subject areas; andDemonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of diverse student populations as might have been gained in education, training, teaching, professional involvement, and other comparable experiences Preferred QualificationsEvidence of teaching effectiveness in health-related subject areas at university or college levels;Leadership or supervisory professional experience in public health or closely related field; andAbility to effectively design, teach, and assess undergraduate and graduate courses in-person, online, and in hybrid formats. Campus Security AuthorityPursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, the faculty coach member in this position is subject to ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). Individuals designated as Campus Security Authorities are required to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution and to complete Clery Act training as determined by the University Clery Director. The rates shown below by range are the anticipated salary from the applicable Faculty Salary Schedule - 2322 to be paid per WTU in Special Session programs (a typical course is 3 WTUs).
