Job OverviewTHOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated subject matter expert-level Naval Architect with a focus on Structures to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have significant prior experience with designing structural and strength components for shipboard use, experience with marine structural codes, and development and use of structural analysis calculations in U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding environments.Typical ResponsibilitiesProvide technical support and documentation for ship feasibility, concept, preliminary and contract design, integration, stability analysis, hydrodynamic and seakeeping properties.Evaluate systems and equipment, develop and analyze requirements, perform studies and documentation relating to hull form, stability, weights, structures, and design.Develop system documentation and ship specifications for surface assets and boats, perform structural analysis and design using ISO and class society standards.Conduct, witness, and document tests including stability tests, speed, power, maneuvering, and seakeeping trials.Provide leadership and coordinate review efforts for verification and validation work for Structural related work efforts in the Naval Architect discipline.Review design review comments submitted by junior engineers and advise decision-makers on considerations for high impact and critical design review decisions.Provide mentorship to junior naval architects related to the area of shipboard structural design calculations and analyses.Location & TravelPrimarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. Alternate telework schedules or work locations may be considered for especially qualified candidates.Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.Typical Physical ActivityPrimarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve repetitive motion, periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, and traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches).Typical Pay RangeThe anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $120,000 - 150,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.Citizenship & ClearanceUS Citizenship Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment.Security Clearance Eligibility Required: This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred) or be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire.Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesBachelor's degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.At least fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in Naval Architecture.
