Summary:

A Communications Security (COMSEC) Custodian is responsible for the secure management, storage, and distribution of cryptographic materials and equipment. This role involves ensuring strict adherence to COMSEC policies, procedures, and regulations to safeguard sensitive information and maintain the integrity of communication security systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Note: All program employees will support their primary functional duties, as described below, and when tasked, participate in the demilitarization processes, to include disassembly of assets, transportation and storage activities, and final disposition support.

Primary Duties:
  • Manage the receipt, storage, and issuance of cryptographic keying material and related assets.
  • Ensure the secure handling and transport of cryptographic materials in compliance with established security protocols.
  • Implement key management practices, including the generation, distribution, and destruction of cryptographic keys.
  • Maintain accurate records of key transactions and usage.
  • Establish and maintain secure storage facilities for cryptographic materials and equipment.
  • Conduct regular inventories and inspections to verify the integrity of stored items.
  • Oversee the secure distribution of cryptographic materials to authorized users.
  • Implement controls to track the movement and usage of cryptographic assets.
  • Ensure the proper maintenance and storage of COMSEC equipment, including cryptographic devices and related hardware.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all COMSEC transactions, including key issuance, returns, and equipment maintenance.
  • Prepare reports on the status of cryptographic assets and compliance with security procedures.
  • Enforce and adhere to COMSEC policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Implement security measures to protect cryptographic materials from unauthorized access or compromise.
  • Develop and implement procedures for reporting and responding to security incidents involving cryptographic materials.
  • Collaborate with security officers in investigating and mitigating incidents.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Successful completion of NSA COMSEC Custodian Training Course IAEC-2112
  • Previous experience in a security-related role, preferably as a COMSEC Custodian.
  • Knowledge of cryptographic principles, key management, and secure material handling.
  • Familiarity with government regulations and standards governing COMSEC practices.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Effective communication skills for training and collaborating with team members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly.
