Overview Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. MRNY operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 27,000, MRNY tackles issues including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. MRNY is a newly unionized workplace. MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees implement strategies to address shared problems and develop leadership for civic participation. We provide bilingual services (ESOL, Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation) and youth programs. Our legal program offers representation in employment, immigration, housing, benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights, and we engage in impact litigation. Our health program includes health insurance enrollment, SNAP navigation, a community health worker program, nutrition education, and emergency food pantries. Current Opening Make the Road New York (MRNY) is seeking a full-time Bilingual Youth Advocate Social Worker to join our School Based Team at Bushwick Campus. The position requires a flexible schedule with occasional evenings and weekends. The Youth Advocate Social Worker will partner with four high schools within Bushwick Campus Community School. The School Based Team supports all four schools inside the campus. A community school is a hub of resources, programs, and services that meet the needs of students, families, and the broader community. This is a full-time in-person position, with best efforts to allow one remote work day per week. Key Responsibilities Provide confidential and supportive counseling and case management to a selected cohort of chronically absent students Refer, assist, and/or advocate for students/families to obtain therapy, benefits, housing, employment, immigration assistance, emergency assistance, shelter, after-school programs, academic support, and additional programs on or off campus Provide outreach efforts such as home visits and phone calls to re-engage students Develop relationships with school staff to support a team approach and integrate support for struggling students into the community school model Co-lead 3–5 campus-wide mental health and community-building events Lead campus-wide mental health coordination efforts, including monthly group meetings with counselors and mental health practitioners from all schools Requirements Eligible to work in the U.S. Educational Level Requirement: MSW Commitment to collective action and community organizing Bilingual English/Spanish required Experience in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic work environment Job Competencies Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail Professional, team-oriented, and committed to excellence Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision Ability to work under pressure Working knowledge of spreadsheets, Microsoft Office, and database use (ideally Salesforce) to run reports Flexible schedule with some evenings or weekends required Strong verbal and written communication skills High level of accountability and initiative; collaborative mindset Salary And Benefits MRNY offers an excellent benefits package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, and personal days.
