Summary

The Venous Access RN is an expert in IV therapy and serves as a resource in the assessment and evaluation of patients for appropriate venous access. The Venous Access RN is competent in the insertion and/or care of venous access devices including ultrasound guided peripheral IV's, midline catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), central venous catheters, and mediports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
  • Assess the physical, psychological, and social needs of the patient for appropriate venous access devices.
  • Plan for appropriate care of the patient by determining interventions for problems/needs that reflect the gravity of those needs; involves family and/or caregivers as appropriate
  • Implement plan of care by performing insertions and maintenance procedures in accordance with National standards (i.e. AVA-Association for Vascular Access) and established organizational policies and protocols
  • Evaluate patient response/tolerance to the procedure
  • Document all assessments, procedures, interventions, and care in a clear, concise, and timely manner
  • Participate in unit/department fiscal goals by conserving resources, contributing to the capture of patient charges, and revenue generation.
  • Communicate to interdisciplinary team members on patient needs following procedures
  • Identify patients at risk for injury and participate in instituting measures to prevent/reduce the risk
  • Adhere to Age Appropriate Competencies in order to ensure patient safety based on developmental needs
  • Contribute to prevention of infectious diseases among employees, patients, and visitors by adhering to Infection Control policies and procedures
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership and education to provide nursing education regarding venous access and patient care.
  • Participate in data collection/research as needed to support performance improvement and quality initiatives
  • Consistently organize work and set priorities to achieve maximum efficiency; complete assessments and procedures in a timely manner
  • Support compliance with hospital accreditation, state licensure, and other external accrediting agency requirement
  • Collaborate with physicians and/or radiology as needed to facilitate other venous access
  • Maintain effective communication systems with all customers, including staff, physicians, and interdepartmental personnel
  • Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services
  • Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care


Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Virginia or compact state.

Preferred Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Required Experience: 2 years recent acute care nursing experience

Preferred Experience: Previous vascular access or IV therapy nursing experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Required: Applicant must be licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or compact state. BLS Certification within 90 days of hire.

Preferred Certification: Vascular Access - Board Certified (VA-BC)
