Summary

Prepare complete and accurate tax returns for Northwestern Mutual and affiliated entities in accordance with income tax rules and regulations.  Prepare proper income tax accounting and financial reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and federal/state tax laws and regulations.  Execute highly efficient processes and procedures such that tax return and financial statement tax data can be reported quickly, accurately and routinely. 

​Primary Duties and Responsibilities


Prepares and Executes Federal Income Tax Return Process:

  • Prepares and executes the process of collecting and organizing the data needed to complete premium, sales and use, and income tax returns

  • Communicates with other areas of the department and the company on the data information needs and executes a process that captures that data such that a complete and accurate tax return can be prepared.

  • Prepares and executes the process of collecting and organizing the data needed to prepare proper financial statement income tax accounting

  • Prepares and supports the filing of foreign tax related documents including the preparation of foreign tax returns, withholding tax filings, preparation of U.S. residency certificates, etc.


Executes Efficient Processes and Procedures:

  • Executes processes and procedures that rely on technology so that tax return data and tax related financial statement data can be analyzed and reported quickly.

  • Communicates with other employees throughout the department and the company to streamline work processes.


Other:

  • Fully complies with new or changing tax laws and regulations for affiliated entities of Northwestern Mutual.  Supports any process changes resulting from changing tax laws and regulations.  Provides support for new policies, procedures and accounting controls to adapt to those changes.

  • Train and supervise tax interns.

  • Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree majoring in Accounting or related work experience beyond the minimum required.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.

  • Ability to problem solve: solve difficult problems with effective solutions; ability to ask good questions, probe, and see underlying or hidden problems and patterns and excellent analysis skills. Excellent analysis skills to include: ability to gather information systematically; consider a broad range of issues or factors; grasp complexities and perceive relationships among problems or issues, seek input from others and use accurate logic in analyses.

  • Ability to effectively develop systems and processes: ability to configure processes and procedures that rely on technology so that tax return data and tax related financial statement data can be analyzed and reported quickly.

  • Ability to influence others: effectively gain support and commitment from others throughout the department and the company to collect and organize data efficiently.

  • CPA or working towards a CPA.

Pay Range - Start:

$44,310.00

Pay Range - End:

$82,290.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
