Job Details

JOB SUMMARY: The Victim Services Advocate will serve the victims of crime seeking support in Scammon Bay and work closely with Bay Haven staff to coordinate emergency services. This position will ensure that the victims of crime have local advocacy, complete intakes and orient new residents as well as provide peer counseling and referral to residents as needed and record interactions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Complete resident intakes and referrals for Bay Haven Shelter.
    • Make sure travel arrangements are done, explanation of programs and make sure all initial paperwork requirements are met.
  2. Answer, respond to and screen crisis telephone calls.
  3. Provide outreach service events that bring awareness to issues regarding domestic violence and sexual assault.
    • Coordinate wellness activities.
  4. Coordinate weekly wellness/support groups that embrace culture and tradition.
  5. Maintain accurate data and confidential resident files.
    • Must update data every day at the end of the shift.
    • Must provide solid information/updates to the Manager.
  6. Recruit for safe homes in the community and provide training and supportive assistance.
  7. Provide peer advocacy and record interactions.
  8. Refer survivors to proper community service organizations and assist in utilization of available resources.
  9. Assist in needs assessment and strategic planning activities in partnership with Bay Haven Coordinator and Community Development Manager.
  10. Coordinate monthly advisory group meetings to guide victim service delivery strategies in Scammon Bay.
  11. Provide monthly updates and listen to recommendations from the traditional council.
  12. Participate in weekly staff and shelter meetings.
  13. Attend training as required.
  14. Perform other duties as required by supervisor(s).
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Participates in all appropriate training functions.
  2. Must be willing to attend meetings, provide direct-service advocacy & do public speaking.
  3. Receive training for on-call advocacy and work on-call status and overtime in addition to regular hours if needed.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly to grasp, type, see, talk, hear, and lift and carry [enter weight here] pounds of weight by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner. This position will also be performing physical activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending, and handling materials.
  2. Occasionally performs sedentary activities that require sitting for long periods and repetitive use of hands, wrists and arms for handling, positioning, moving materials, and manipulating things.
  3. Must be in good general health and free from serious physical, mental health and/or substance abuse problems.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or hours vary with location. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
TRAVEL:
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS AND REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Must pass state and federal background checks, including fingerprints.
  3. Responsible work ethic with reliable attendance.
  4. Proven ability and willingness to be self-directed in problem solving and decision-making and perform basic assignments with little or no direct supervision while also working effectively as a team member.
  5. Demonstrated intermediate level of computer skills necessary in order to use and create documents and reports, spreadsheets, workshop materials and slide presentations, and to enter data into intricate database programs and proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook.
  6. Must keep all matters concerning participants in strictest confidence as required by HIPAA privacy and the 42 CFR, Part II confidentiality regulations.
  7. Must be able to provide own transportation to meet work schedule requirements.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  1. High School Diploma or GED required. AA or higher degree preferred.
  2. Must have at least three years of victim service advocacy or similar experience and training.
