Menlo Park, United States SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Full time

Optical‑Electrical Engineering Group Leader Join to apply for the Optical‑Electrical Engineering Group Leader role at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Position Overview The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) Engineering Division at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking an engineering technical manager to lead the Laser Engineering Department’s Precision Timing and Synchronization Group. LCLS is the world’s first X‑ray Free Electron Laser facility, operated by Stanford University at SLAC, on behalf of the Department of Energy/Office of Science. It offers world‑leading scientific capabilities to a global user community, encompassing advanced materials, clean energy, drug discovery, and fundamental astrophysical studies. LCLS operates as a user facility, providing ultrashort, ultra‑bright X‑ray pulses to seven experimental instruments focused on specific science areas. Femtosecond optical lasers play an integral role in many experiments, and the Laser Engineering Department deploys and supports these laser systems. The Precision Timing & Synchronization group synchronizes ultrafast lasers with the X‑ray FEL, supporting operations, new system delivery, and R&D improvement programs. Future upgrades—including new X‑ray source upgrades, instrument additions, and a Petawatt‑class laser at the Matter in Extreme Conditions endstation—will present ongoing engineering and operational challenges. As group leader, you will manage a team of engineers and technicians, provide supervision, mentorship, guidance, and training, foster staff development, facilitate engineering rigor, and participate in hiring activities to support the LCLS mission. You will collaborate with stakeholders to develop and propose technical solutions and projects, and administratively report to the LCLS Laser Engineering Department Head. Your Specific Responsibilities Include Establish the Precision Timing & Synchronization group as the world leader in synchronizing lasers and X‑rays to world‑class precision. Work with staff scientists, engineers, and academic partners to develop a technology roadmap informed by modeling and future facility requirements. Establish robust collaborations in academia, sister light sources, and industry to help solve significant technology challenges. Direct and assign work to personnel while balancing technical challenges and project progress. Promote adherence to the LCLS Conduct of Engineering, ensuring rigor with accurate documentation and engineering reviews. Identify, propose, and manage system performance improvements through an annual upgrade portfolio. Implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency. Provide leadership in continuous operational improvement through root‑cause corrective action. Prepare and conduct performance management activities for personnel and contribute to LCLS engineering ranking and salary management processes. Monitor system performance, identify repairs to meet milestones, and lead corrective actions as needed. Influence strategic technical decisions made by LCLS management. Contribute to the definition of complex engineering solutions for X‑ray‑based experiments. Perform engineering duties requiring significant scheduling and budgeting responsibility. To Be Successful In This Position, You Will Bring Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics and eight years of relevant experience (or equivalent education and experience) #J-18808-Ljbffr
