Departmental Overview The Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory (NanoLab) on the UC Berkeley campus features over 15,000 square feet of Class 100 and 1000 cleanroom space. It offers academic and industrial researchers comprehensive micro‑ and nanofabrication capabilities supported by expert equipment and process engineering staff. The NanoLab Machine Shop at Cory Hall delivers specialized engineering, design, and precision fabrication services for custom instrumentation and fixturing. This position provides professional technical, mechanical, and engineering development and maintenance support of the facilities, equipment, and processes of the Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory and related research laboratories within the College of Engineering and other campus departments. Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: October 22, 2025 – Open Until Filled Responsibilities 30% Equipment Support Plan, coordinate, and carry out electrical connections for semiconductor processing, micro/nanofabrication, and other specialized laboratory equipment, in close coordination with graduate researchers, faculty, building managers, inspectors, and service providers. Equipment includes thin‑film deposition, etch systems, thermal processing furnaces, photolithography tools, analytical systems, packaging tools, chillers, vacuum pumps, and support equipment. Also support research computers, servers, and data storage systems. Handle cable and wiring (e.g., CAT5, CAT6, audio–visual) between equipment, computers, labs, and machine rooms. 25% Specialty Systems Plan, coordinate, and carry out electrical service and connections for specialty wiring systems such as building utility monitoring, card key access control, material monitoring, and fire alarm systems. Work with Project Manager and campus authorities (e.g., UCPD, fire alarm technicians) for pre‑review, inspection, and approval by the campus fire marshal. 20% Facilities Support Plan, coordinate, and install electrical services for laboratory, instructional, and research support spaces. Perform repair and maintenance of electrical services, ensure compatibility with utility conditions, update panel schedules, and coordinate inspections with Berkeley campus inspectors. 15% Design, Planning, and Documentation Use CAD tools and hand drawings to design and develop schematic diagrams and working drawings for electrical services and connections. Provide information and schematics to the permit office, coordinate with supervisors and academic units, and maintain records in the Machine Shop Jobs Management System. 10% Machine Shop Support and Maintenance Coordinate and install electrical connections for the machine shop equipment (CNC machines, lathes, saws, grinders, welding machines, dust collectors). Support the design and fabrication of hardware modifications and custom parts. Maintain electrical parts inventory, develop standard operating procedures, and practice safe work methods in the shared machine shop environment. Required Qualifications Journeyman level Electrician with 5 years’ experience. Low‑voltage cable connection experience. Estimating skills for materials and labor for electrical services and equipment connections. Communication, design, documentation, drawing, layout, electronic, mechanical, and troubleshooting skills. State of CA Electrician License. Preferred Qualifications Experience in semiconductor processing and nanotechnology equipment support. Experience with HVAC, facilities, and utilities support. Demonstrated knowledge of building‑wide systems interrelationships. Ability to operate CNC milling machines, lathes, saws, and hand tools. Ability to design and draft working drawings using CAD software. Knowledge of MSDS for corrosive/toxic chemicals and gases. Working knowledge of OSHA regulations. Salary & Benefits Under California law, UC Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range. The budgeted salary for this position is $68.34 per hour. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits, paid biweekly, and is FLSA non‑exempt.
