Departmental Overview: The College of Environmental Design (CED) is a diverse educational and research environment with three academic departments—Architecture, City & Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning—and one academic/research unit, the Institute of Urban & Regional Development. CED has approximately 50 senate faculty, 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students, and about 80 total staff. It also houses research centers, fabrication services, labs, studios, and general use classrooms. Application Review Date: First review on 11/20/25 – open until filled. Responsibilities 40% Administrative and Operational Leadership Serves as Chief of Staff to the Dean and principal administrative strategist to Department Chairs and senior leadership. Advises on all college operations and leads core day‑to‑day business functions through subordinate managers across all departments and units. Develops, directs, and implements college‑wide policies, procedures, and operational guidelines while ensuring regulatory compliance and operational efficiency. Supports community building through staff‑focused programs, aligning teams and advancing cross‑team collaboration. Manages sensitive, high‑stakes issues requiring diplomacy and strategic negotiation. Provides consultation on academic and curricular matters related to studio, lab, and fabrication space planning. Determines organizational structure, assigns supervisors, and aligns staffing with institutional priorities. Ensures administrative continuity across departments through communication and change‑management leadership. 40% Financial and Budgetary Management / Oversight Serves as Divisional Finance Leader (DFL) and chief budget officer for the College. Develops and manages the College’s annual budget (~$42 M+), including multiyear forecasting and financial modeling. Conducts financial trend analysis to inform short‑and long‑term planning, identify underutilized resources, and recommend cost control measures. Oversees financial oversight for temporary academic support, enrollment‑based revenue, gift funds, research support, and revenue‑generating programs. Coordinates with campus‑level financial leadership to ensure compliance with fiscal policies. Designs and implements budget strategies aligned with enrollment, auxiliary revenue, research activity, and temporary academic support. 10% Executive Advising, Strategic Planning & Special Projects Serves as strategic advisor and thought partner to the Dean and senior administrators, setting and executing long‑term goals. Drives long‑range strategic planning and leads key initiatives, including financial reform, academic expansion, and organizational change. Leads high‑impact, cross‑functional projects such as capital planning, enrollment growth, and program expansion. Authors and presents analyses, reports, and recommendations to inform resource allocation and staffing decisions. Coordinates with faculty committees to align operations with strategic academic and research goals. Works with development staff to support fundraising initiatives tied to strategic and capital planning. 10% Campus Collaboration and Representation Represents the College on campus and systemwide committees, including the Provost’s Associate Council. Serves as the College’s liaison to key administrative partners across campus. Engages regularly with leadership in other colleges to align with university‑wide goals. Participates in systemwide discussions on IT funding, budget modeling, administrative streamlining, and strategic planning. Required Qualifications Advanced knowledge of system‑wide, campus, and college policies. Excellent project‑management skills, including managing capital projects. Strong collaboration skills and ability to persuade in sensitive situations. In‑depth knowledge of financial analysis, reporting, human resources, risk management, accounting, and payroll. Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service orientation. Proficiency with common campus‑specific and other computer applications. Ability to evaluate complex issues and devise creative solutions. Analytical and technical skills to manage and evaluate data. Sound decision‑making regarding hiring, evaluation, and development of employees. Outstanding leadership skills with emphasis on team‑building and consensus‑building. Strategic thinking and ability to synthesize large amounts of qualitative information. Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training. Salary & Benefits The University of California offers a comprehensive benefits package, detailed on the Compensation & Benefits website. The salary range for this position is $171,000–$230,000. Compensation is determined based on qualifications and experience and never outside the posted range.
