Senior Naval Architect THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated senior-level Naval Architect to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have significant prior experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations. Typical Responsibilities Provide technical support and documentation for ship feasibility, concept, preliminary and contract design, integration, stability analysis, hydrodynamic and seakeeping properties. Evaluate systems and equipment, develop and analyze requirements, perform studies and documentation relating to hull form, stability, weights, structures, and design. Develop system documentation and ship specifications for surface assets and boats, perform structural analysis and design using ISO and class society standards. Conduct, witness, and document tests including stability tests, speed, power, maneuvering, and seakeeping trials. Location Full time onsite at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. May be limited hybrid flexibility with customer approval. Travel Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks. Typical Physical Activity Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve repetitive motion, periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision. Typical Pay Range The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $120,000 – 150,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience. Security Clearance Eligibility for a SECRET Security Clearance is required. This position requires eligibility for a Secret security clearance, to be obtained after hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution. At least six (6) years of progressive experience in Naval Architecture. At least one (1) year of experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs required. Experience with naval architecture software solving complex problems regarding hull design. Experience with corrosion principles of metals for surface assets and boats. Knowledge of U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations. Proficient with common productivity software. Strong communications skills. Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Master’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution. Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs preferred. Relevant certifications preferred, such as: Professional Engineer (PE) license. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. DHS Systems Engineering certification. DHS Program Management certification.
