Lecturer Pool Middle Eastern Languages and History Position in the Department of Middle Eastern Languages & Cultures at UC Berkeley. Position Overview Salary range: The posted UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. A reasonable estimate for this position is $68,247 - $97,304. Salary scale table. Percent time: Positions range from 33% to 100% each semester. Summer positions are 11% (part‑time positions that are weighed at 50%). Anticipated start: Appointments start January 1 for spring semester, August 1 for fall semester and July 1 for academic year. Summer appointments begin in late May and run into early August. Review timeline: Applications are typically reviewed for summer session course needs in March/April, for fall course needs in April/May, and for spring course needs in October/November. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee a position is available. Position duration: Appointments are made on a semester‑by‑semester basis and may be renewable based on the department's need, funding, and performance. Application Window Open date: March 24, 2025 Most recent review date: Friday, May 16, 2025 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Final date: Tuesday, Mar 24, 2026 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Position Description The Division of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a pool of qualified lecturers to teach courses in any of the following areas: Modern Hebrew Modern Greek Egyptology In addition to instruction, general responsibilities (but not limited to) include: Preparing course materials and assignments Maintaining course website Providing guidance to undergraduates in MELC majors/minors, in consultation with ladder faculty Supervising and preparing graduate student instructors Holding office hours Writing, grading, and commenting on exams and papers Cooperating with department language coordinators to plan and teach the department’s Language Pedagogy courses (for language instructors) Other duties as assigned More information on currently taught online courses is available on the department website: https://melc.berkeley.edu/. Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Master’s degree (or equivalent international degree). Additional qualifications (required at time of start): For those who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (e.g., a U.S. visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The Department is unable to provide a visa/work permit. Preferred qualifications: For all language instruction: Native or near‑native fluency in the specified language; college‑level teaching experience; capacity to employ up‑to‑date and effective methods of language pedagogy and testing; experience with computer‑assisted language learning (CALL) is desirable. For Modern Hebrew: Master’s/Doctoral degree (or equivalent) in Hebrew language, linguistics, applied linguistics, or related field; native or near‑native competence in speaking, listening, writing, and reading Hebrew; experience teaching Hebrew at the college level. For Modern Greek: Master’s/Doctoral degree (or equivalent) in Modern Greek language, linguistics, applied linguistics, or related field; native or near‑native competence in speaking, listening, writing, and reading Modern Greek; knowledge of Katharevousa as well as Demotic Greek is preferred; experience teaching Modern Greek at the college level. For Egyptology: Doctoral degree (or equivalent).
