Position Summary

The Lead Crane Mechanic plays a critical role in managing work orders, enhancing customer service experiences, driving revenue growth, and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. This position is pivotal in mentoring and coaching technicians to ensure high performance and adherence to company standards

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Technical Expertise:
    • Perform advanced diagnostics, conduct regular inspections, service, repairs and preventive maintenance on company and customer heavy equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
    • Complete thorough and accurate inspections, identify issues, and propose effective solutions. Complete inspection reports, warranty and other required paperwork.
    • Execute necessary repairs to bring equipment back to operational standards.
  1. Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in heavy equipment. Reads and understands operating manuals, blueprints and technical drawings.
  2. Repairs and replaces damaged or worn parts. Tests mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance. Problem solves to find part as quickly as possible.
  3. Maintains service truck parts inventory when in the field. Maintains personal tool inventory.
    • Grease, oil, and perform minor repairs to components such as engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
  • Customer Service and Representation:
    • Serve as primary in-field representative for the company, ensuring exceptional service delivery and customer satisfaction.
    • Identify service opportunities and recommend solutions to enhance customer relationships and loyalty.
    • Respond promptly to service requests, troubleshoot problems, and provide technical advice and support to customers.

  • Recordkeeping:
    • Maintain detailed records of maintenance and repair work performed on each piece of equipment.
    • Utilize computerized systems for accurate recordkeeping and inventory management.
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools, machines and equipment are properly cared for an maintained.
    • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines during all maintenance and repair activities.
    • Identify and report potential safety hazards or equipment deficiencies.
  • Leadership and Team Development:
    • Mentor, coach, and train technicians to enhance technical skills, customer service capabilities, and overall performance.
    • Foster a positive and collaborative team environment, promoting open communication and teamwork.
    • Stay updated on technical knowledge and product information for all equipment and knowledge share with the team.
    • Recommend process improvements and efficiencies to enhance service delivery and customer satisfaction.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  1. Highschool diploma or equivalent. Certification from a vocational school or apprenticeship program is a plus. Additional technical certifications and/or experience in diagnostics is a plus.
  2. Proven experience as a Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic, preferably in the heavy equipment rental or construction industry.
  3. Must be willing to travel, work flexible hours, including weekends, if needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Knowledge:
    1. Mechanical Know-How: In-depth understanding of heavy equipment mechanical systems, including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical components.
    2. Troubleshooting Skills: Ability to find and fix problems in heavy equipment, using diagnostic tools when needed. Familiarity with various diagnostic tools, software, and equipment for accurate issue identification.
    3. Maintenance Knowledge: Knowledge of routine maintenance to keep equipment running smoothly.
    4. Safety Awareness: Knowing and following safety rules for working on heavy equipment.

  1. Skills:
    1. Mechanical Know-How: Understanding of how heavy equipment works, including engines, transmissions, and hydraulics in a field type setting.
    2. Troubleshooting & Decision-Making Skills: Ability to find and fix problems in heavy equipment, using diagnostic tools when needed and then make sound decisions and judgements in servicing and maintaining equipment.
    3. Maintenance Knowledge: Knowledge of routine maintenance to keep equipment running smoothly.
    4. Safety Awareness: Knowing and following safety rules for working on heavy equipment.

  1. Abilities:
    1. Adaptability: Adjusting to different types of equipment and staying updated on changes in the industry.
    2. Time Management: Managing time well to get maintenance and repairs done on schedule.
    3. Communication - Ability to effectively communicate with field and in-house employees and customers regarding servicing and maintaining company equipment to meet their needs in a safe and efficient manner.
    4. Collaboration: Working well with the team to schedule and prioritize equipment maintenance.
