Position OverviewThe Operations Leader – Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department and drives the sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. The role coaches and mentors Pet Care Center partners in processes that support and enhance the guest experience and animal care. Responsibilities include training, developing, and supporting operations scheduling, leading a high‑performing team to achieve budgeted sales goals, gross margin, animal and merchandise shrink targets, and managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center’s business in line with Petco operational standards and safety procedures.Position ResponsibilitiesUtilize business acumen to measure, analyze and diagnose business trends and effectively implement improvement plans.Ensure the health and well‑being of live animals by providing correct care per Petco standards, including the hourly animal health check and wellness cards.Adhere to Veterinary Protocol for all sick animals.Process register transactions creating a great guest experience.Be proficient within the selling model and support guest interactions as needed.Implement Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching partners in Animal Care, Aquatics, Maintenance, Ordering, Regulatory Compliance, CAPI, HAHC, CAPC, and Vet Care/Relationships.Efficiently order live animals to maximize sales, margin, and inventory; analyze inventory data and recommend improvements.Maintain operational standards and ensure all animal related maintenance tasks are completed per the Maintenance Task List.Maintain high presentation standards in aquatic and companion animal areas.Partner with the Operations Leader – Merchandising to keep in‑stock merchandise levels; report changes or overrides to maintain I.M. grade.Handle and document all Adoption Animals properly.Maintain knowledge of PCC Sales and Margin reports.Lead, provide feedback, and coach PCC partners to deliver quality service.Ensure proper partner scheduling to meet in‑stock goals and guest service levels during peak hours.Apply talent management skills: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and succession planning.Provide quick and courteous service to guests, sharing product knowledge and suggesting appropriate merchandise.Support Omni Channel implementation through training partners in BOPUS, Ship‑from‑store, Curbside, Endless Aisle, and overall Guest Experience.Act as Leader on Duty overseeing Pet Care Center execution, training, communication, maintenance, legal compliance, policies, procedures, safety, and promotions.Train, coach, and develop operations partners in partnership with the sales team.Promote a positive leadership culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.Display and champion Petco Leadership Expectations.Other Essential DutiesMODEL INSPIRING LEADERSHIP – Model leadership and selling behaviors, maintain a positive business climate, and advocate for change and growth.PROMOTE SAFETY – Ensure Petco policies, procedures, and safety standards are observed; implement new policies correctly.FOSTER A COLLABORATIVE CULTURE – Encourage partner ideas to increase efficiency and improve guest engagement and company image.PRIORITIZE TALENT DEVELOPMENT – Build a strong talent bench and provide developmental programs and leadership opportunities.ENGAGE AND BE PRESENT. – Represent Petco’s brand, lead the team with high standards in a fun working environment.Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent required; some college in business/management preferred.1+ years of management experience (2+ preferred).Valid motor vehicle license.Proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applications.Demonstrated business, finance, analysis, problem‑solving, and people development skills.Strong guest service and instructional aptitude.Supervisory ResponsibilityDirectly supervises Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists.Supports quick and courteous service as Leader on Duty.Ensures Pet Care Center opening/closing per established P&Ps.Maintains attendance processes with center leaders.Promotes safety procedures.Work EnvironmentRole requires support during key operational hours, weekend availability, and indoor work with occasional merchandise stocking, customer carry‑outs, and bank deposits. Physical demands include bending, kneeling, moving up to 50 pounds, and prolonged standing.
