Job Overview Location: Mason City, IA 50401 – Fresenius Medical Care Holdings, Inc. Position: Medical Surgeon – Hemodialysis (Permanent) Posted 10 days ago. Purpose and Scope Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and training, and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Patient Related Assist other health‑care members in providing patient‑specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures (Online Clearance Monitoring, Adequacy Monitoring Program, Urea Kinetic Modeling, and disease process/access). Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since last treatment. Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or as allowed by state law. Obtain pre‑ and post‑treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation. Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD). Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention per physician order or as directed. Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy; document vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet. Discontinue dialysis treatment per procedure, evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access, and perform hemostasis with appropriate dressings. Assure accurate calculation and entry of dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration goal, treatment time, and UF modeling. Ensure safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits) are enabled and perform machine safety checks. Report significant changes in patient condition directly to the registered nurse or supervisor. Obtain laboratory testing samples, prepare specimens, and ensure proper collection according to laboratory specifications. Prepare, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent waste. Support patients in self‑care under RN supervision where applicable. Staff Related Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under the supervision of a nurse. Education/Communication Follow all organization policies, procedures, and systems incorporated into training, including compliance with ethical business practices. Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics; ensure all areas are safe and clean. Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surfaces, chairs, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments per facility policy. Conduct all tasks related to preparation for dialysis treatment and perform required pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing (Pressure Holding). Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS) as needed. Record Keeping Complete and document participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities. Enter all treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and timely. Review treatment sheets for completeness; ensure nursing signatures are documented and correct omissions. Prepare initial patient chart for admission and compile paperwork for chart placement. Prepare and print lab requisitions for prescribed or stat specimens. Collect, label, and store lab samples as per required specifications. Ensure collection of lab specimens by appropriate courier. Infection Control Assist in collecting information for infection control audits. Support staff and patients in adhering to infection control practices. Follow infection control policies and procedures. Participate in and reinforce infection control education for patients and families under the direction of the CM or designee as allowed by state law. Transitional Care Unit Follow all newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis, coordinating transitional dialysis care. Reinforce education and care-related matters as allowed by state law. Liaise with FKC staff members to ensure best patient experience and appropriate scheduling of disciplines. Assist in assuring patient understanding of home dialysis products, benefits, and how home dialysis can work. Set and perform treatments on all machines used in the transitional care unit. Assist in reassuring patients about treatment options, including demonstration of peritoneal dialysis set‑up. Assist with coordination of transition to patient’s modality choice. Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit. Physical Demands and Working Conditions The role requires frequent, prolonged standing, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs. Frequent travel between facilities may be required. Work environment is a health‑care facility with moderate noise levels and exposure to infectious materials. Employees must be able to perform essential functions with reasonable accommodations for disabilities. Education and Licenses High School diploma or G.E.D. required. Must meet CMS‑approved state and/or national certification requirements within required timelines. All appropriate state licensure, education, and training are required. Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards. Experience and Required Skills Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred. Successful completion of the organization dialysis training program and CPR certification is required.
