Civil Engineering Technician/Engineer Intern

Under the direction of a Professional Engineer, the Civil Engineering Technician/Civil Engineer Intern provides support to the City Engineer for commercial and residential land development projects. The individual will assist in pre-work needed in order to approve development plans and will perform a variety of engineering tasks related to plan reviews for grading and erosion control, drainage, residential and miscellaneous permits, as well as commercial land development, roadways and city infrastructure.
This individual will work closely with builders and contractors to ensure that development projects adhere to city codes and ordinances. Work will be performed at build sites as well as in the office. Familiarity with programs used to create projects, gather and evaluate data, and created reports and correspondence is essential.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Reviews residential grading and erosion control plan applications, existing and planned topography, and stormwater pollution prevention plans for code compliance.
- Interprets and enforces the development ordinance including but not limited to: access management, parking facility design, grading, land alteration, stormwater pollution prevention, and erosion control ordinances which may include investigating and documenting inspections and/or violations.
- Provides and effectively communicates review comments and code requirements.
- Conducts site surveys to evaluate the condition of pre-construction field including grading and erosion surveys and contractor work to identify problems that may exist.
- Communicates regularly with builders, contractors, and internal parties to ensure projects are meeting all requirements and can move forward in timely manner.
- Gathers data and prepares reports.
- Enters information and extracts data from computer-aided design software.
- Assists with a variety of tasks as needed.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Technical or vocational certification as Civil Engineering Technician with prior practical experience. BS in Civil Engineering BS in Civil Engineering is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of building and construction.
- Understanding of basic engineering science and technology.
- Attention to detail with high level of accuracy.
- Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

- Ability use a variety of software programs related to engineering tasks and city data management.
- Ability to effectively present information, respond to questions, and confer with city employees as well as the public.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to read and understand maps, technical drawings, codes and specifications.
- Knowledge of applicable safety practices and procedures.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and database applications maintained by the City or County.
- Basic knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications.
- Ability to read and interpret data from computer-aided design software.
- Ability to read and understand grading plans, proposed topography, existing topography, and other similar items.
- Ability to manage time effectively, work independently and to make sound judgments and decisions.
- Understanding of local government public and private development codes and ordinances.
- Attention to detail with high degree of accuracy.
- Must possess excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
