Position Summary:* *

Sovah Martinsville is seeking a full-time Special Procedures Respiratory Care Practitioner to examine patients with breathing-related conditions and conduct diagnostic testing. Consult with physicians to develop and implement a treatment plan for the patient. Performs physiotherapy and other treatments and teaches patients to use medications.

  • Evaluate respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices. Drag Edit Delete

  • Responds to codes and calls for emergent assistance. Assesses patient condition and delivers appropriate treatment. Drag Edit Delete

  • Educates the patient and family about the patient's illness and provides information about community support groups and other resources. Drag Edit Delete

  • Monitors, receives stocks and distributes respiratory care supplies and medical gas cylinders. Drag Edit Delete

  • Maintains storage areas with required supply levels and equipment. Drag Edit Delete

  • Disassembles, cleans, and sterilizes equipment, and performs preventative maintenance and calibration of machines. Drag Edit Delete

  • Provides diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on physician-prescribed patients with acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary dysfunction, utilizing state-of-the-art procedures and bio-medical equipment.

  • Coordinates and participates in the administration of medical gas therapy, humidity therapy, aerosol therapy; NT, ETT, tracheostomy suctioning, and tracheostomy care. Chest physical therapy, hyperinflation therapy, treatments, and the administration of medications used in respiratory care procedures by physicians' orders. Drag Edit Delete

  • Performs twelve-channel electrocardiograph examinations.

  • Performs the more complex respiratory care procedures including calibrating, setting up, and monitoring of mechanical ventilators, blood gas analyzers, Bronchoscopy equipment, and pulse oximeters.

  • Evaluates, initiates, monitors, and weans patients from mechanical ventilation.

  • Performs Holter Monitoring set-up, instruction, and analysis.

  • Performs Event Recorder set-up, instruction, and data collection.

  • Participates as a member of the cardiac Arrest Team responding to emergency or STAT calls to establish natural and artificial airways, including oro/naso endotracheal intubations. Drag Edit Delete

  • Provide clinical instruction on the proper use of equipment to hospital staff and patients; make rounds with physicians to discuss preferred treatment methods for individual patients.

  • Set up and perform arterial catheterization. Monitor and troubleshoot homodynamic equipment.

  • Participates in the routine maintenance of equipment; makes periodic rounds to ensure proper functioning of bio-medical equipment.

  • Transport patients requiring manual ventilatory support or supplemental oxygen to various locations within the hospital or to other hospitals.

  • Assists in the orientation and training of new personnel.

  • Performs simple portable spirometry.

  • Posts charges into the hospital information system.

  • Participates in the department's Quality Assurance Program.

  • Participates in preoperative and post-operative evaluations of patients. Drag Edit Delete

  • Performs therapeutic and diagnostic bronchoscopy including Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), and Navigational Bronchoscopy.

  • Participates in rotated department staffing calls as assigned by the Director of Pulmonary Services or the Patient Care Coordinator.

  • Performs Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) -Martinsville Campus Only

Minimum Education:

Required Skills:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity and eye and hand coordination.
  • Requires standing, walking, stooping and stretching. Occasionally lifts, carries and pushes items weighing up to 100 lbs. (Mechanical ventilators, electrocardiographs, stretchers, and patient care carts).

  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.

  • Certification by the American Heart Association in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Basic Life Support.

Minimum Work Experience:

  • One year of critical care experience, to include hemodynamic monitoring, bronchoscopy assistance, and mechanical ventilation set-up, management, and patient care assessment.
  • One year of routine respiratory care experience is required. Graduation from an Associate Degree level program can be substituted for one year of experience.
