Engineer -Substations & Transmission - Relay

Base pay range: $100,000.00/yr – $135,000.00/yr Overview Transmission Relay Engineer required to join a collaborative engineering culture in Orange and Rockland Engineering. The work allows for broad, diverse experience managing small to large projects that provide learning and challenge opportunities. The Engineer works under limited supervision of the Principal Electrical Engineer or Manager of Transmission and Substation Engineering, performing electrical engineering work in the Transmission Relay Engineering discipline. Responsibilities include design and application of utility-grade relay systems to transmission and substation systems for the company, and providing engineering support to various operations groups throughout the company. The Engineer will serve on committees as required and attend and represent the Company at industry meetings. Responsibilities Ensure implementation of Company safety, health and environmental programs for employees whose work is directed, complying with Company policy and governmental regulations. Prepare sketches used as design guides for Design Drafters in the preparation of relay and meter one‑line diagrams, schematics, and construction drawings. Perform relay setting calculations for electromechanical, solid‑state, and microprocessor type relays, using vendor software and communication‑assisted protection systems. Use the Aspen One Line system‑modeling program for fault current simulations and relay coordination. Support field personnel to develop relay system testing, analyze system problems, and perform root‑cause analysis. Prepare outage reports for each system relay operation and system disturbances, providing test letters and corrective action plans. Prepare preliminary engineering cost estimates for feasibility studies to develop project alternatives. Visit manufacturing facilities to witness tests on protection apparatus and prepare reports. Participate in departmental meetings and serve on committees as required. Inform department leads of project progress, including the department budget. Stay abreast of industry developments, specifically in the Relay and Transmission Planning field. Actively participate in the Company’s Emergency Response Plan through a designated storm assignment. Familiarity with NERC, NPCC, and RFC standards and requirements associated with protection systems. Qualifications Required Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and 3–5 years of engineering work experience in Relay Engineering. Must be an experienced relay engineer capable of running relay projects, approving drawings, and fault event review. Preferred Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Relevant Work Experience: Minimum 1 year experience related to relay and control system design. Experience and/or knowledge of Transmission relay design, settings and testing. Interpret one‑line, schematic, logic diagrams, and wiring drawings. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong analytical, technical and computer skills. Ability to apply good judgment, initiative, creativity, and decision making in the handling of assignments. Technically proficient in a broad range of engineering responsibilities and willing to explore and implement new solutions. Proficiency with ASPEN and SEL/GE software. Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated analytical skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Licenses and Certifications Driver’s License required. Professional Engineer (PE) – preferable to hold NY, NJ & PA PE license or be in the process of qualifying. Additional Physical Demands Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to customers.
