PRIMARY FUNCTION: To assist the Nurse Manager in the overall administrative direction for the clinical and operational practice of nursing and delivery of patient care on _______________________ ANCC Magnet designated unit/practice area within ChristianaCare. Shares 24-hour responsibility and accountability for all aspects of daily operational activity with the Nurse Manager. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Participates in hiring, promotion, salary adjustment, and termination decisions. Functions as a highly visible role model, demonstrating quality expertise and professional behaviors which support professional development of staff and the strategic goals of ChristianaCare. Identifies and develops strategies to improve the overall knowledge base and professionalism of staff. Directs, mentors and supports all level of staff. Enables a Relationship-Based care approach to care delivery on assigned unit(s). Identifies potential future leaders and engages in succession planning. Performs routine rounds on patients and caregivers on assigned unit/practice area to establish visibility, teamwork, and monitoring the level of care/practice. Participates in staffing as a caregiver based on needs of the clinical area and requirements for off shift coverage and patient acuity. Analyzes administrative and operational functions; implements appropriate changes and system wide improvements. Develops, implements and monitors performance improvement and patient safety initiatives. Supports and facilitates a culture of nursing professional governance and mentors unit committee/council chairs. Facilitates cooperative and collaborative relationships among other ChristianaCare departments, patient care areas and physician office practices. Participates in preparation of annual capital and operating budget. Supports the department leadership team in organizing and prioritizing capital needs. Assists in the analysis of monthly expenditures and develops plans to offset variances. Identifies new program and service opportunities for the department. Acts as a liaison with other hospital departments to enhance program development and improve clinical excellence. Develops and maintains methods to ensure patient, employee and physician satisfaction. Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to the appropriate personnel, in a timely fashion, any unsafe activities, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employee, patients, and visitors. Performs other related duties as required. SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS: Daily contact with nursing personnel, patients, family members, employees, medical/dental staff, volunteers and students. Contact at various time intervals with community agencies and companies, media and other healthcare organizations as well as the general public DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS: Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical nurses, Unlicensed Assistive Personnel, Clerical staff, Clerks, and Service Assistants. DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Nurse Manager, Service Line Director and/or Vice President EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Must have OR experience and CNOR certification. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing Completed Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Master's Degree in a nursing, healthcare or business management field required or currently enrolled to be obtained within 5 years of promotion into position. If no BSN, Master's degree in nursing is required. 5 years appropriate clinical and leadership experience in area or specialty KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of public relations principles and practices Knowledge of administrative concepts, labor relations and management processes Knowledge of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses Knowledge of the ANCC Magnet Model components of Transformational Leadership (TL), Structural Empowerment (SE), Exemplary Professional Practice (EP), New Knowledge, Innovations & Improvements (NK), and Emperical Outcomes (EO). Knowledge of Relationship Based Care Model for Patient Care Delivery Knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques Knowledge of department policies, procedures and operations Knowledge of appropriate chain of command Knowledge of ChristianaCare Human Resources management and employee resources Knowledge of software programs (Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint) Knowledge of ChristianaCare computer systems Skill in written and verbal communication Skill in interpersonal relations Ability to apply ChristianaCare Core Values to daily activities Ability to reason, prioritize, problem solve and identify problems Ability to be flexible and adaptable under constantly changing situations and conditions Ability to supervise and direct personnel Ability to delegate work and responsibilities to subordinates and effectively evaluate their performance Ability to plan, organize, and implement policies and procedures Ability to establish and maintain positive interdepartmental working relationships Ability to develop project plans including timelines, computer testing, staff education and project evaluation Ability to exercise judgment, tact and diplomacy Ability to maintain confidential information and materials Ability to respond to emergency situations according to ChristianaCare or departmental policy Plans, organizes and coordinates multiple/simultaneous projects SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: BLS Certification Professional certification in a related nursing specialty required Current nursing licensure in the State of Delaware or compact state PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to stand, walk, sit, lift, push, pull, carry, reach, twist, handle, stoop, climb, as per unit based Physical Demands checklist. WORKING CONDITIONS: Occasional exposure to chemical and environmental elements as per unit based Physical Demands checklist.
