SUMMARY

Oversees the educational curriculum for Fellows, Residents, Students and newly hired Sonographers. Provides education and guidance in performing diagnostic echocardiographic procedures to assess cardiac structures and hemodynamics, utilizing various modes and techniques, including but not limited to 2-dimensional, M-Mode, color flow, pulse wave, and continuous wave Doppler, in accordance with accepted Rochester Regional Health Policies and Procedures.

Location: Rochester General Hospital based, floating to other RRH facilities as needed.

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, Day Shift

LICENSURE

Appropriate credential in echocardiography from: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independent performance of routine and specialized independent echocardiographic studies, including transthoracic, stress echocardiographic techniques, transesophageal and contrast exams as needed at inpatient and outpatient facilities within Rochester Regional.
  • Follows HIPPA regulations, respecting and providing patient’s confidentiality and privacy. Introduces self to patient, and role in care. Explains procedure with instructions, to ensure patient cooperation, patient safety, and obtaining optimal results. Assists patient during transfer from wheelchair, stretcher or bed to exam table.
  • Accesses preliminary diagnostic report attached to procedure to formulate a preliminary interpretation for the reading cardiologist, also provides preliminary comments for each structure examined. Discusses findings with reading cardiologist as needed.
  • Obtains and provides previous echocardiographic studies for comparison with current study, if available.
  • Assists and coordinates the professional development, education, and training of Fellows, Residents, Students and newly hired Sonographers. Functions as the resource imaging expert for all staff cardiac sonographers.
  • Delivers educational presentations to Fellows, Residents, Students, and cardiac sonographers.
  • Acts as super-user when new equipment or programs are being introduced to the department.
  • Collaborate with Chief Sonographer, Lead Sonographers and Fellowship faculty.
  • Participate in educational courses and curriculum development.
  • Participate in scan labs at RIT and other Colleges.
  • Productivity time would be 70% minimal and 5 to 6 patients a day.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to all RRH sites.
  • Oversees all of RRH Cardiology Fellow’s, Fellows from other specialties, Residents, Students and newly hired Sonographer’s for all inpatient and outpatient sites at RRH.
  • Performs appraisals and maintains longitudinal evaluation of Fellow, Resident, Student and Sonographer performance to lead Sonographers, Chief System Cardiac Sonographer and Cardiology fellowship faculty, site Echo Directors and Division head of cardiac Imaging.
  • Leads quality assurance activities.
  • Participates in and leads special projects, such as process improvement and quality improvement projects.
  • Participates in the process to attain and maintain IAC accreditation for the echo lab, including IAC related QA processes and meetings. Assures compliance by Cardiac Sonographers of IAC objectives and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Provides support to Fellows, Residents, Students and newly hired Sonographers during recruitment and orientation.
  • Serves as a resource to staff in resolving complex issues and providing technical skills.
  • Assists system Chief Sonographer, Division head of Cardiac Imaging and site Echo Directors with development of new clinical Policy and Procedures.
  • Applies independent judgement during the exam to ensure appropriate anatomical, pathological and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the exam images per current RRH Echocardiography Policies and Procedures.
  • Performs the necessary cardiac measurements to generate preliminary findings and image acquisition/storage to support the interpreting physician of the finalized diagnostic report.
  • Maintains the echo lab facility and exam rooms in clean working order, communicating facility needs when appropriate.
  • Troubleshoots day-to-day operations, equipment malfunction and inventory/product supply.
  • Addresses conflicts pertaining to resources necessary to run operations efficiently.
  • Assumes responsibility that the ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels.
  • Attends monthly echo fellow conferences at RRH, and local and national Echocardiography/Cardiology conferences to increase clinical knowledge base.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and cooperative working relationship with peers and supervisory staff, and accepts feedback and coaching in a positive manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Cardiac Sonographer.

RCS - Registered Cardiac Sonographer - Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), RDCS - Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
