Functions as pharmacy automation technician for pharmacy in addition to other Pharmacy Tech responsibilities. Position responsibilities may include downloading data from systems such as Meditech® and automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) for the purpose of converting data into information to be used by management and clinical staff. Serves as an expert source of information regarding automation functions and enhancements. Creates monitoring processes that increase efficiency and effectiveness while maintaining medication safety and security. Supports an environment and culture representative of the hospital’s mission and values. In collaboration with pharmacy management, establishes policies and procedures, standards, and objectives for the provision of automation. Reports to the Director of Pharmacy. Performs other selective support functions under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

• Troubleshoots problems with automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) and/or Meditech downtimes. Troubleshoots interfaces between automation/technology sources such as MedComm®, Pyxis®, and Meditech.
• Develops and conducts education related to automated dispensing cabinet software upgrades by providing user instruction materials, training, and support to users.
• Develops educational materials and trains pharmacists & technicians on the use of automated dispensing cabinets and the policies and procedures related to them.
• Facilitates and tests software/hardware upgrades and provides analysis of upgrades’ impact on operational procedures.
• Coordinates continuous optimization of automated dispensing cabinets.
• Provides oversight of the checking of medication expiration dates in automated dispensing cabinets and reconciliation of manually admitted patients.
• Monitors all automated dispensing cabinets for integrity and functionality.
• Prioritizes tasks on project list as ranked by the pharmacy director.
• Generates data and assists in data analysis and presentations.
• Facilitates implementation of new automated dispensing cabinet equipment including file builds, education and logistics
• Ensures automated dispensing cabinet best practices and regulatory compliance.
• Provide oversight related to controlled substance compliance auditing as assigned by the pharmacy director.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the pharmacy director.
• Routinely assesses compliance of end-user utilization of ADC.
• Participates in relevant Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives.
• Effectively communicates with staff including publishing and distributing memos, minutes, newsletters, and notices to ensure effective communication with internal and external staff.

Must also fulfill staff technician responsibilities as assigned:

• Fills unit dose drug orders/prescriptions under supervision of the Pharmacist.
• Prepares unit dose drug orders to include packaging and labeling of medication under the pharmacist's direction.
• Cleans various areas of the department as required.
• Fills patient medication bins, floor stock exchange carts, automated dispensing machines (by Certified Pharmacy Tech Only) and anesthesia boxes, etc. under supervision of the pharmacist.
• Assists in maintaining inventory control in the pharmacy
• Assists in the identification and return of out-dated medications.
• 6. Delivers medications, exchange carts, and supplies to the various nursing units on a routine basis.
• Answers telephone and work area window, assisting physicians, nursing personnel, and others by directing their questions or requests to the appropriate pharmacist.
• Works in IV Admixture area - prepares IV's, TPN solutions, Intensive Care Nursery/Peds and Chemotherapy under direct supervision of the pharmacist.
• Enter pharmacy charges, via a computer.
• Performs tasks as specifically outlined on duty sheet roster for the specific shift.
• Orders drugs and supplies, restocks drug and supply orders.
