Position Function: The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is responsible for implementing specific aspects of a treatment plan to an assigned youth or youths within CVCA's service areas of Philadelphia, Montgomery or Delaware counties, depending on program location. The clinician is additionally responsible for teaching and reinforcing pro-social, adaptive skills and transfer of those skills to a family member or school environment. BHTs provide services in the youth's school, home and/or other community settings individually or in a group.

Individuals who provide BHT services shall meet one of the following:

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Have a one of the following certifications: a BCaBA, an RBT or a BCAT.

or

  • Have a behavioral health certification or behavioral analysis certification from an organization that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the American National Standards Institute.

or

  • Have high school diploma or equivalent and have completed a 40-hour training covering the RBT

Task List as evidenced by a certification that includes the name of the trainer, who is certified as a BCBA or BCaBA.

or

  • Two (2) years verified full-time paid work experience working in the provisions of behavioral health services with children /

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical guidelines, service expectations, and authorization requirements
  • Demonstrates good judgment
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments, manages work-related stress
  • Relates well to other individuals

Essential Job Functions:

Major highlights of the position requirements are noted below. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as required.

  • Maintain all record keeping/documentation and consistently participate in supervision according to program policies and procedures and regulatory criteria;
  • Complete progress notes and encounter forms within twenty-four hours
  • Follow rules of the school or whatever environment service is being provided in
  • Sign-in at school when present in a school building
  • Assist the youth in maintaining appropriate behavior;
  • Reinforce the youth's use of adaptive, pro-social behavior by providing frequent social and nonsocial rewards;
  • Supervise and monitor the youth's participation in activities, providing support as needed;
  • Provide skill teaching as outlined in the youth's Individual Treatment Plan;
  • Conduct crisis intervention sessions with the youth as needed;
  • Use the least restrictive, least intrusive interventions to address the youth's problematic behaviors;
  • Participates in the development of the youth's Individual Treatment Plan (ITP);
  • Maintains regular contact with other members of the treatment team to provide and receive feedback on the youth's performance.

Supervision Requirements:

  • Participates in one (1) hour of supervision each week (if the BHT works at least 37.7 hours per week) or Participates in one (1) hour of supervision two (2) times per month (if the BHT works less than 37.5 hours a week), at least 1 hour must be face-to-face (Face-to-face supervision maybe be delivered through secure, real-time, two-way audio and video transmission that meets technology and privacy standards required by the HIPPA.
  • If the individual has not previously provided BHT services (no experience), six (6) hours of onsite supervision during the provisions of services to a child/youth or young adult prior to providing services independently.
  • One (1) hour of direct observation of individual services to a child/youth or young adult during the implementation of the ITP every 4 months, unless the BHT has the following: Have high school diploma or equivalent and have completed a 40-hour training covering the RBT Task List as evidenced by a certification that includes the name of the trainer, who is certified as a BCBA or BCaBA.

Or

  • One (1) hour of direct observation of the provisions of individual services to a child/youth or young adult during the implementation of the ITP every 2 months, if the individual meets qualifications to provide the BHT services to include the following: a high school diploma or equivalent and have completed a 40-hour training covering the RBT Task List as evidenced by a certification that includes the name of the trainer, who is certified as a BCBA or BCaBA.
  • Supervision must include the following: discussion of interventions being implemented, progress towards the goals and adjustments needed to the ITP, as well as the BHT's skills in implementing the interventions of the ITP.
  • Documentation about each supervision shall be maintained by a supervisor, in the BHT's personnel file, to include the following: date of and start/end time of the supervision session, location and modality of session, format of the session (group, individual or onsite), summary points of discussion and the signature and date of the supervisor and BHT receiving the supervision.

Training Requirements:

  • All new hires are required to attend mandated orientation and complete required trainings.
  • Persons who are hired to provide BHT services on or after January 1, 2021, and who have no BHT experience must complete at least thirty (30) hours of training to include attending the mandated orientation prior to working alone with children/youth or adolescents. The trainings must be documented in the agency's file and must include at least the following topics:

  1. CPSL and Mandate Reporting requirements;
  2. Child and Adolescent development;
  3. Psychotropic medications, including side effects;
  4. Externalizing and Disruptive Behaviors in Children and Adolescence.


  • If an individual has not provided BHT services (no experience), the individual shall complete at least

twenty-four (24) hours of training within the first six (6) months of working with children and

adolescents. The overall training curriculum must be documented in the agency's file and include

at least the following topics:

  1. Professional ethics, conduct, and cultural issues in treatment for professionals
  2. Strategies and interventions to engage children/youth in families in services through


principles and clinical practice;

  1. The role of the BHT worker in the home, school, and community, including the use


of community resources to support the child/adolescent and collaboration with the family;

  1. Crisis intervention, behavior management, de-escalation techniques and safety;
  2. Overview of serious emotional disturbance and other behavioral needs in children


and adolescents (with emphasis on the specific diagnoses of the children/adolescents

with whom the BHT staff may be working);

  1. Guidelines for documentation;
  2. Communication and Conflict Management;


  • An individual who provides BHT services (experienced) must complete at least twenty (20) hours of annual training that is related to the individual's specific job functions and that is consistent with the policies and procedures of the IBHS agency.

  • Family Home/Community/Schools
  • Cases may be assigned anywhere within Philadelphia, Montgomery or Delaware counties depending on program location
  • Require travel between multiple sites.
