Description

Methodist University seeks a Chair of Academic Clinical Medicine for its new School of Medicine in partnership with Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayetteville, NC. The Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine is an applicant program with the LCME with an anticipated start date of Summer 2026 for its charter class. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to be socially accountable, community-engaged, evidence-based, compassionate, equity-focused physician leaders who will contribute to mitigating health disparities and improving health outcomes in southeastern NC or wherever they may practice. We are seeking a creative, forward-thinking, student-focused physician educator who will oversee the academic and research aims of our Clinical Departments. The Academic Medicine Chair will report directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine. The Chair will work collaboratively with both the Sr. Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the Associate Dean of Clinical Education. The Chair will lead a committee of our fourteen Section Chairs representing each of our clinical disciplines. An MD or equivalent terminal degree is preferred. Leadership experience in academic medicine is required. The qualified candidate will be a role model for demonstration of the competencies expected of all physicians and will garner respect from the members of the medical staff. It is expected that the Chair will maintain a medical license and continue a limited practice in their discipline. Interested applicants should apply through the Methodist University website.

Title:

Chair, Clinical Academic Medicine

Reports to:

Dean, School of Medicine

Direct Reports:

Clinical Section Chairs (with the Associate Dean of Clinical Education)

Responsibilities:
  • Further the mission, vision, and goals of Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine
      • Oversee the development of clinical course syllabi, learning objectives, content, and assessments.
      • Ensure that clinical education is fully integrated in all phases of the curriculum.
      • Participate in the education of medical students across all three phases of the curriculum.
      • Serve as lead for clinical education within a completely integrated pre-clerkship curriculum.
      • Participate in LCME accreditation activities as a leader in the medical school.
      • Define and engage in a research/scholarly agenda for clinical medicine.
      • Participate in relevant medical school and university committees.
      • Participate in relevant regional and national organizations.
      • Role model professionalism and adhere to institutional policies and procedures.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned MD or other equivalent terminal degree in medicine.
  • At least five years of teaching experience in academic medicine.
  • Demonstrated commitment to innovative educational approaches.
  • Evidence of a scholarly approach to education and evidence of scholarship in the field of clinical medicine or medical education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A license to practice medicine and the maintenance of a limited clinical role

Preferred qualifications
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience using different active learning modalities.
  • Proficiency with writing NBME-style questions
  • Experience with curricular and instructional design
  • Experience with curriculum management software systems
  • Emerging or established regional or national reputation.
  • Prior experience as a discipline lead and/or a preclerkship course director
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in complex interdisciplinary and interprofessional settings.
  • Experience with a clinical presentation curriculum is strongly desired.
