Position: Deputy Superintendent of Academics

Primary Purpose

The Deputy Superintendent of Academics is pivotal in advancing educational excellence across our schools, focusing on leadership, student achievement, curriculum, professional development, and assessment. This role spearheads strategic initiatives to enhance educational outcomes, involving analysis and implementation of solutions to optimize student success, curriculum efficacy, and professional growth opportunities. Expertise in curriculum, assessment methodologies, policy development, and instructional best practices is imperative. Additionally, the role entails cultivating leadership and development programs aligned with district goals, supporting teacher growth, and facilitating effective communication between principals and central administration. The Deputy Superintendent of Academics acts as a driving force for educational progress, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement district-wide.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's and Master's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Doctorate preferred but not required
  • Valid Texas administrator or principal certificate
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • T-TESS and T-PESS certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of EC-12 curriculum and instruction
  • Knowledge of state accountability and assessment
  • Knowledge of special programs, such as special education, 504, EB and gifted and talented
  • Knowledge of instructional technology
  • Knowledge of leadership development
  • Ability to interpret data and evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures
  • Strong leadership, communication, public relations and interpersonal skills

Experience:
  • Five or more years of progressive education administrative experience including school and district leadership experience at an executive level.
  • Experience leading the design, implementation and management of district-wide systems to improve measurable improved student achievement.
  • Strong leadership & organizational effectiveness skills with demonstrated experience managing multiple complex roles and responsibilities.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional and Management:
  1. Provides leadership in and oversee the development and delivery of curriculum and instructional programs that incorporate district goals and support student achievement that exceeds state requirements.
  2. Lead the district-level decision-making process with regards to the district's goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs. Ensure that goals and objectives are developed using effective collaborative processes and problem-solving techniques.
  3. Monitor and reevaluate instructional programs on an ongoing basis using input from teachers and principals, applied research, and student data to determine effectiveness and improve outcomes. Recommend changes and adjustments where appropriate.
  4. Ensure that the necessary time, resources, materials, and technology to support accomplishment of education goals are available.
  5. Collaborate with executive directors, principals, teachers, and other instructional staff to develop, maintain, and propose revision of curriculum documents based on a systematic review and analysis.
  6. Engage instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional tools and materials to meet student learning needs.
  7. Actively support the efforts of others to achieve district goals and objectives and campus performance objectives.
  8. Oversee staff development programs and ensure that effective activities that support instructional programs incorporate input from teachers and principals, and are consistent with the district's mission are provided.
  9. Participate in the implementation of the designated teacher appraisal system.

Policy, Reports and Law
  1. Ensure compliance with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in curriculum and instruction area.
  2. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
  3. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  4. Offer constructive suggestions to ensure that policies and regulations support the teaching/learning process.

Budget
  1. Define the program and fiscal needs in the budget development process, ensuring that fiscal resources address the mission of the school district.
  2. Develop and administer the curriculum and instruction budget based on program needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed prudently across all funds.

Personnel Management
  1. Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions in curriculum and instruction department as needed.
  2. Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.
  3. Select, train, evaluate, supervise and make employment recommendations for instructional supervisors and support staff in the curriculum department.

Communication
  1. Ensure that established goals and expectations related to implementation of the curriculum and instruction programs are communicated clearly, consistently, and in a timely manner.
  2. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community members.

Community Relations
  1. Articulate the district's mission, instructional philosophy, and curriculum implementation strategies to the community and solicit its support in realizing district's mission.
  2. Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  3. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Other
  1. Prepare and deliver written and oral presentations on curriculum and instruction issues to the Board of Trustees, principals, teachers, parents, and community groups. Attend regular meetings of the Board of Trustees.
  2. Stay abreast of current research and best practices in curriculum and instruction and adjust plans, policies, and procedures accordingly.
  3. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws related to curriculum and instruction. Stay abreast of state and federal public policy changes that could impact the district.
  4. Perform any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Salary

Administrative Pay Grade 7, 12 Duty Months
  • Minimum $130,000
  • Midpoint $160,000
  • Maximum $190,000

The district contributes $400/monthly to the cost of "employee-only" health insurance which is $175/monthly greater than the state required amount of $225/monthly.
