Job Summary

The University of Michigan Department of Cardiac Surgery is seeking a well-qualified Statistician to support biostatistical and analytic activities for a variety of research projects within the Section of Health Services Research and Quality (HSRQ). The Section of Health Services Research and Outcomes is a nationally recognized leader in advancing clinical and health services research and quality improvement. The department is seeking additional analytical support to advance internally and externally funded projects to achieve its research, quality and training missions. Strong analytic, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills are critical to this role.

The successful candidate will support the department and HSRQ section's research mission, gather and analyze data, clean and construct datasets, perform statistical programming, and provide technical assistance to the investigative research team members. In this role, the candidate will utilize a variety of data sources (e.g., administrative, clinical) to assess variability in access, treatment and outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease.

The statistician staff specialist will work with a highly collaborative group of clinicians, policy experts, statisticians, economists, health services' researchers, and analysts. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain expertise in data management and analyses, and exposure to health policy reform evaluation. The selected candidate will be able to advance their analytical and verbal/written communication skills, as well as participate in manuscript and grant submissions.

Candidates for this position must be driven, with an intellectual curiosity and desire to continue learning, as well as the ability to work on multiple projects at once. This position allows for significant growth, with the opportunity to develop statistical methodologic skills.

This position offers a flexible work schedule and the ability to work a hybrid schedule or fully remote.

Responsibilities*

* Develop and draft specific analysis plans (including statistical power and sample size calculations).
* Write and edit programs to clean, manage, merge, and analyze datasets
* Extract, transform, and merge raw data from various data sources into usable forms, and construct datasets according to the specifications provided
* Perform statistical programming utilizing SAS, R, STATA and a variety of other statistical software packages to summarize data and create reports and/or visual presentations
* Design, create and implement programs and templates to collect, display and analyze data for assigned projects and/or investigative team members
* Prepare and maintain technical documentation of data and analysis files
* Design and prepare standard and ad hoc reports
* Design and prepare summaries for statistical analysis and planning purposes
* Document procedures for future reference and make recommendations for data analysis process improvements
* Participate as a team member in discussions on analysis and improvement of data collection, quality of data analyses, programming and documentation
* Contribute to the strategic direction of the HSRQ
* Present analytic methods and new approaches to accomplishing project goals
* Support the development and publication of academic research papers and grant submissions

Required Qualifications*

* Bachelor's degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position
* Demonstrated ability to work independently in a detail-oriented fashion, and cooperatively
* Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
* Knowledge and working experience in generalized linear regression, survival analysis, multilevel modeling, propensity score analyses
* Demonstrated ability to draft statistical tests in accordance with the project's design, solve analytic problems, and develop instruments and related analysis plans.
* Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
* Demonstrated proficiency working with large datasets using statistical software programs (SAS preferred, but STATA and R are also acceptable)



Lead Level

* Minimum 5 years of experience analyzing and interpreting clinical and claims data
* 5+ years of professional experience using statistical software programs (e.g., SAS, Stata, and R; SAS preferred)

Senior Level

* Minimum 2 years of experience analyzing and interpreting clinical and claims data
* 2+ years of professional experience using statistical software programs (e.g., SAS, Stata, and R; SAS preferred)

Desired Qualifications*

* Master's degree in relevant field
* Previous experience working with administrative claims data
* Working familiarity with basic statistical models and significance testing
* Familiarity with working in virtual data environments or enclave-based data systems
