24-25 VISTA Supporting Access to Justice in Wyoming

The goal of this VISTA project is to alleviate poverty by increasing access to justice, which can allow individuals to resolve their legal issues even if they cannot afford an attorney. Access to justice encompasses representation in court, reduction of legal barriers to service, and ready availability of information and resources, all of which help people protect their livelihoods, health, homes, and families, and in turn stabilize communities. Equal Justice Wyoming (EJW) produces and disseminates self-help legal resources and supports access-to-justice initiatives. The VISTA Member will be involved in community engagement, fundraising analysis, and program development aimed at providing increased access to justice in order to expand EJW's capacity to serve low-income individuals and provide greater access to the courts. EJW is partnering with Legal Aid of Wyoming, Inc. (LAW) to host this VISTA position. LAW is a non-profit law firm providing legal help to low-income individuals living in Wyoming. The VISTA Member will help alleviate poverty by maximizing the provision of legal services to those living in, or in danger of falling into, poverty. The VISTA's efforts will result in visualization tools, project reports, and a data tracking system. Member Duties : 1. Meet with the Executive Director to learn about annual fundraising activities. 2. Gather data from previous years for each fundraiser. 3. Create a system to track the data going forward. 4. Become well-familiar with EJW legal events and outreach methods. 5. Develop visualization tools to allow for easy evaluation of outreach and event effectiveness. 6. Assess physical locations for events. 7. Research options for remote real-time events. 8. Draft a report of findings and recommendations. 9. Meet with Legal Aid's Executive Director and tribal partners to learn about the history of projects on the Wind River Reservation and to discuss anticipated future projects. 10. Become familiar with the parameters of funding for requested projects. 11. Research similar projects in other tribal communities. 12. Prepare a report on the needs of each project and the feasibility of LAW partnering with the Wind River community to launch and maintain each.
