**Responsibilities**
The Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center collects bloods products from volunteer donors. These products are then used to care for Mayo Clinic patients and those in the surrounding communities. The Donor Services nursing team is an integral part of ensuring that our donors have a safe, positive experience, and that Mayo Clinic maintains a secure blood product inventory.
Nurses in Donor Services partner with Donor Technicians to meet the needs of donors. Nurses complete assessments, following up on abnormal findings during the physical exam, IV infiltrations, donor adverse reactions, or to assess donor illnesses that may require donated blood products to be pulled from the supply. Donor assessments may be completed both in-person and via telehealth. Nurses are also responsible for the administration of medications needed during the donations.
Nurses provide care at both Mayo Clinic donations centers located at Hilton and Northwest Clinic.
The licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides nursing care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse (RN) or other assigned supervisor and accepts delegation from the RN/assigned supervisor in meeting the needs of the patient/family. The LPN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and instructing; and may participate on committees or projects, including quality improvement projects.
