SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision of the Division of Food and Nutrition Services, operates medium or light weight trucks in the loading and delivery of food and other materials in accordance with route optimization strategies to ensure efficient, timely and safe delivery of goods to MCPS sites. Work involves analysis of various factors impacting the assigned route, independent decision-making, performing manual and clerical work in the selection, storage, inventory control and issuance of MCPS property. Positions require continuous moving of materials by hand and electric material handling equipment. Employees may operate a vehicle up to 53,200lbs. gross vehicle weight and are required to follow a strict daily schedule. Employees in this class must operate trucks in accordance with requirements set forth in the Maryland Department of Transportation publication, Lawful Weight Limits. Follows HACCP guidelines for safely transporting and storing food and related items.

CERTIFICATE LICENSE:

Possession of a valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver's license and a valid Maryland Class B commercial driver's license (trucks over 26,000 lbs. registered gross vehicle weight) or the ability to acquire the Class B license or equivalent within 6 months of hire. Completion of an OHSA approved certification program on the operation of power industrial equipment or the receive certification training within 6 months of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Knowledge of best practices in food safety/handling and working knowledge of route optimization strategies. Ability to assess and analyze situations and conditions and independently make decisions relative to delivery routes. Must be able to perform under pressure and meet deadlines. Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions necessary to prevent accidents. Knowledge of warehousing and storekeeping practices and procedures. Knowledge of the requirements set forth in the Maryland Department of Transportation publication, Lawful Weight Limits. Knowledge of the operation of power industrial forklifts, pallet trucks and related equipment, including occupational hazards and safety precautions. Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Ability to learn the geography of Montgomery County and the location of streets and school buildings. Ability to rapidly and accurately fill orders, including proper palletization of product. Ability to check foodstuffs, supplies and other materials rapidly for accuracy and safety. For the Division of Food & Ability to climb to perform daily circle checks as well as temperature checks on refrigeration units. Ability to accurately record and maintain records and reports. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to safely handle and deliver frozen and perishable foods in accordance with established standards and procedures. Ability to work effectively with others. Skilled in the operation of medium and light weight delivery trucks and power industrial forklifts, pallet trucks and related equipment. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

High School or GED diploma required. One year of experience as a professional truck driver required. Proven experience loading and unloading cargo efficiently and safely; experience handling perishable and food items; experience monitoring and maintaining safe conditions for food cargo to ensure student and staff health and safety. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
