Job Overview:

The Montana Mental Health Nursing Care Center is a licensed residential facility for the long-term care and treatment of person who have mental disorder who require a level of care not available in the community, but who cannot benefit from the intensive psychiatric treatment available at Montana State Hospital. The Mental Health Program Coordinator performs professional metal health services as a member of a multi-disciplinary care plan team within MMHNCC. The position coordinates care plans, assigned groups, schedules, and clinics to assure quality of care and resident accountability. Other responsibilities include counseling residents regarding issues such as day-to-day problems, resident rights, behavior management, family issues, and provides support during emotional crisis.

Major Duties or Responsibilities:

A. Administrative Leadership and Program Development 50%

* Develops, designs, and applies methods and techniques relating to mental health evaluation and treatment intervention, considering the resident's appearance, attitude, activity, mood and emotions, speech, and language, thought process and content, cognition, and insight and judgement.
* Assists Care Plan team in developing and updating individualized care plans which address behavioral problems and interventions appropriate for living successfully in the nursing home environment.
* Utilizes supervision principles and skills to increase staff effectiveness in the delivery of mental health services and behavioral interventions.
* Adheres to established Quality Assurance/Improvement Plan so that resident's needs are constantly addressed.
* Provides mental health educational presentations and in-service training to facility staff focusing on understanding mental health conditions and supportive behavioral intervention strategies.

B. Resident Treatment 40%

* Counsel residents regarding issues such as day-to-day problems, resident rights, behavior management, crisis intervention and grief. May counsel family issues, financial issues, Advanced Directives, and therapeutic home visits, among other issues.
* Assesses resident's abilities and potential capabilities by using appropriate assessments, testing, and monitoring of resident's mental health status. Uses this information to form recommendations for behavior management interventions and mental health therapy programs.
* Participates in clinics and staff meetings to give professional opinions and information for evaluations, presentation of psychological testing, and review of patient behaviors, treatment goals and objectives.
* Coordinates and participates in treatment of residents to include both individual therapy and group therapy. Instructs staff in treatment approaches and techniques.
* Performs mental status evaluation, status reports.
* Provides documentation of all psychotherapeutic services provided to clients to facilitate treatment and interdisciplinary communication.
* Utilizes knowledge of the ethical standards and laws related to developing and implementing treatment programs for intellectually disabled persons for documentation and to reduce liability.

C. Other Duties As Assigned 10%

* Consults with the nursing staff on progress or problems of individual residents.
* Assists in meeting responsibilities of other staff such as Social Workers as needed.
* Continues education in the field of psychology to remain current in the profession.
* Assists with special projects as needed.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Must be able to maintain concentration and direction in an environment with constant interruptions from staff, residents, and visitors. Working conditions carry unpredictable job hazards as residents have various psychiatric illnesses with potential to be aggressive verbally and physically. Risk of injury with aggressive behaviors from resident. Working primarily indoors is of light demand necessitating some walking, standing, and bending. Must have hearing and visual acuity and color vision. Requires manual dexterity. Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens. Walking, standing, and sitting for variable periods. May occasionally lift to 50 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors):

Required for the first day of work:

* Considerable knowledge of the principles, terminology, and techniques and principles of psychological assessment, tests and devices, personality therapy, and psychotherapeutic techniques.
* Interviewing and information gathering skills.
* Ability to plan and implement treatment programs.
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
* Skill in computer and software programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, medical provider software, and computer application procedures.
* Establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships and deal efficiently and effectively with the public and service providers.
* Excellent ability to organize and prioritize and maintain concentration and direction in a disruptive environment.
* Ability to follow oral and written instructions explicitly and be detailed focused.
* A LCPC or LCSW is Management preference or highly preferred.
