Responsibilities:

  • Pediatric Eye Examinations: Perform thorough eye examinations for pediatric patients, including infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents, assessing visual acuity, refractive errors, ocular alignment, binocular vision, and ocular health.
  • Vision Screening: Conduct vision screening tests, such as visual acuity testing, stereoacuity assessment, color vision testing, and visual field screening, to identify vision abnormalities and detect amblyopia, strabismus, refractive errors, and other visual disorders in pediatric patients.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment: Diagnose and manage a wide range of pediatric eye conditions and vision disorders, including amblyopia, strabismus, refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), congenital ocular anomalies, pediatric glaucoma, and ocular manifestations of systemic diseases.
  • Contact Lens Fitting: Evaluate pediatric patients for contact lens candidacy, prescribe and fit contact lenses (soft, rigid gas permeable, specialty lenses) for therapeutic or refractive purposes, and provide education and training on contact lens insertion, removal, and hygiene practices.
  • Orthoptic Assessment: Perform orthoptic assessments, including cover testing, prism measurements, ocular motility evaluations, and stereopsis testing, to evaluate binocular vision function and assess the presence of strabismus or other binocular vision anomalies.
  • Vision Therapy: Develop and supervise vision therapy programs to address accommodative and binocular vision dysfunctions, visual perceptual deficits, and ocular motility disorders in pediatric patients, with the goal of improving visual skills and enhancing academic performance.
  • Pediatric Myopia Management: Implement myopia control strategies, such as multifocal contact lenses, orthokeratology, pharmaceutical interventions, and lifestyle modifications, to slow the progression of myopia and reduce the risk of associated ocular complications in pediatric patients.
  • Patient Education: Educate pediatric patients and their parents/guardians about the importance of regular eye examinations, proper eye care practices, vision protection, and early detection of vision problems in children to promote lifelong ocular health and optimal visual outcomes.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with pediatricians, pediatric ophthalmologists, educators, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated care for pediatric patients with complex medical and visual needs, ensuring comprehensive management and optimal outcomes.
  • Community Outreach: Participate in community outreach programs, school vision screenings, and educational workshops aimed at raising awareness about pediatric eye health, promoting early detection of vision problems, and advocating for timely intervention and treatment.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Optometry: Completion of a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree program from an accredited optometry school.
  • State Licensure: Valid and unrestricted license to practice optometry in the state of employment, complying with state licensing requirements and continuing education obligations.
  • Pediatric Optometry Residency: Completion of a postgraduate residency program in Pediatric Optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) or equivalent specialized training in pediatric eye care.
  • Board Certification: Board certification or eligibility in Pediatric Optometry by the American Board of Optometry (ABO) or the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), demonstrating proficiency and expertise in pediatric eye care.
  • Clinical Experience: Demonstrated clinical competence in conducting pediatric eye examinations, diagnosing and managing pediatric eye conditions, and providing vision therapy services to pediatric patients across diverse age groups and clinical presentations.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with pediatric patients, parents/guardians, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams, conveying complex ocular health information in a clear, compassionate, and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Pediatric Focus: Passion for working with children and adolescents, patience, and the ability to establish rapport and build trust with young patients to facilitate a positive and comfortable eye care experience.
  • Attention to Detail: Keen attention to detail and meticulousness in performing eye examinations, interpreting diagnostic findings, and documenting patient records accurately and comprehensively.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to assess visual abnormalities, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop individualized treatment plans tailored to the unique needs and preferences of pediatric patients and their families.
  • Commitment to Professional Development: Commitment to ongoing professional development, staying abreast of advancements in pediatric optometry, evidence-based practices, and emerging technologies in vision care through participation in continuing education courses, conferences, and scholarly activities.
