The Criminal Division of the Lake County State's Attorney's Office is seeking an experienced attorney in our Felony Review Division. Applicants should be prepared to independently make felony charging decisions as well as run court calls and hearings. Some criminal experience is required. The position requires flexible hours, with night and weekend work on a rotating basis.
Essential Functions
* Conductshearingsinfirstappearancecourtanddetentioncourt.
* Takesdirectionfromsupervisors.
* Preparesindictmentsandconductsgrandjury proceedings.
* Workscloselywithlawenforcementastheyrespondtoinitialreportsofcrime.
* Interactseffectivelywithlawenforcement,colleagues,andJudges.
* Isresponsibleforindependentlyexercisingappropriatechargingdiscretion.
* Willingnesstoanalyzefelonycasesandenterintopleanegotiationsinfirstappearancecourt.
* Availability to work nights and weekends on a rotating basis as the attorney responsible for felony charging decisions.
Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required
Toperformthisjobsuccessfully,anindividualmust,ataminimum,meetthefollowing qualifications:
* MustbealicensedattorneyinIllinoiswithsignificantcriminallawexperience.
* Aminimumof12monthsofexperienceincriminallaw.Priorworkinprosecutionis preferable.
* Considerableknowledgeofcriminallaw,judicialprocedures,andrulesofevidence.
* Ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment, determine appropriate case resolutions, and litigate in a courtroom.

* Candidatesmusthavestronganalyticalandproblem-solvingskills,excellentoraland written communication skills, and be able to practice strategic thinking.
* Organization,attentiontodetail,andsoundjudgmentarerequired.
* Candidatesmusttakeinitiativeandbeadaptabletochangesinthework environment.
* Dependability and punctuality are imperative for success in this role.
* Willingnesstoswitchbetweenan8:30to5:00pmworkdayandaneveningand/or weekend workday on a rotating basis among attorneys in the division.
* Candidates must know the elements of criminal offenses and have a strong understanding of evidentiary rules.
Education and/or Other Requirements
* CompletionofaJurisDoctoratedegreeprogram.
* LicensedAttorneyintheStateofIllinois.
* A minimum of 12 months of experience in criminal law. Prior work in prosecution is preferable.
