Job Description:

Job Summary:

The Staff RN is a registered professional nurse who is responsible for the direct and indirect nursing care of the patients on his/her assigned unit during a given period of time. The RN will provide nursing care for a potential patient population consisting of male and female, Pediatrics, adolescent, adult, geriatric, with majority of patients being in adult and geriatric age. He/she is also responsible for the direction and supervision of personnel assigned him/her.

Qualifications:

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Current Wisconsin Licensure with renewal as directed by the State.

BLS and ACLS certifications

Abilities and Knowledge:

Participation in continuing education programs. Knowledge of new trends and techniques in nursing. Maintains good physical and emotional well-being. Possesses personal qualities such as kindness, sympathy, understanding, respect, good judgment, integrity, loyalty, a sense of humor and an ability to relate effectively to patients and their families and staff. Evidence of knowledge and ability to use proper channels of communications. Recognizes the importance of setting a good example for others. Must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The RN performs patient assessments, plans care for assigned patient, implements the prescribed plan of care, insuring patient safety, and determines if goals have been attained through evaluations. The RN performs in whichever capacity, patient condition, census and/or staffing levels necessitate. The RN may be required to assist and/or staff in other departments as necessary. The RN recognizes job relationships and is willing to function effectively within the organizational structure The RN assumes responsibility for insuring continued professional growth, follows all safety, security and infection control (including high risk category universal precautions) and hazardous materials policy and procedure. The RN performs all tasks to assure personal safety as well as that of patients/residents. Other duties as assigned.

Work Setting/Environment:

Work is performed indoors although patients/residents may be escorted out of the building for a brief time. The nursing unit is well-lighted. Heat, air conditioning, and humidity are controlled by the building's central system with usual norm of 72 degrees. There are constant exposures to infectious disease, blood, body tissues, and fluids with occasional exposure to hazardous materials. Potential for exposure to loud or unpleasant voices, bodily injury or stress of working with patient/residents and their families during times of illness, confusion, and agitation.

Equipment Used:

Adaptive assistive devices for ADL, ambulance radio, respiratory therapy nebulizer/oxygen equipment, vital sign machines/data scope, bed trapeze, Bucks traction, Apollo tub, call/intercom system, central heart monitor, Enteral & IV pumps, commode, continuous passive motion device, electric bed, External Pacer, EKG, gait belt, Geri chair, gloves, hamper, isolation apparel, K-pads, heart monitor/defibrillation cart, microwave oven, nail clipper, suction set-up, telephone, pulse oximeter, razor (manual), sequential compression device, shaver (electric), sterilizer, Electronic thermometers (oral/rectal), TV, DVD player, Wheelchairs, glucometer, computer/laptops, scanners.

From time to time equipment may be added/deleted from this listing dependent on change in technology and practice.

Physical/Sensory/Cognitive Requirements:

PHYSICAL:

Strength:

Ability to transfer, lift, move and turn a patient/resident to or from a bed, wheelchair, Hoyer lift, EZ stand, toilet, tub and shower and occasionally the floor. Following assessment for need of assistance requires varying degrees of pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting due to the difference in patient/resident weights which could be over 100 pounds.

2. Manual Dexterity:

Must be able to continuously perform manipulative tasks of writing, handling papers, computer keyboard/laptop/mouse/scanner, using the equipment listed above as well as safety pins, buttons, snaps, buckles, and tie strings. Occasionally performs difficult manipulative tasks, such as IV starts.

3. Coordination:

Ability to safely assist a patient/resident with all ADL's, transfer and ambulation and use of equipment requiring good hand/eye coordination. Requires steadiness and the ability to move about in tight spaces, between objects, equipment, and furniture.

Mobility:

Must be able to continuously stand and walk; frequently squat, climb stairs, bend to the floor, reach over the shoulder, kneel, twist, stretch or sit for varying periods of time during a scheduled shift of up to 12 hours.

5. Speech:

Must be able to continuously articulate clearly and precisely, with English as the basic element of speech.

6. Emotional Stability:

Must be able to continuously deal effectively with stress created by sick patients/residents, multiple tasks, noises, interruptions and work cooperatively as part of the health care team while maintaining a pleasant demeanor.

SENSORY

1. Vision:

Must be able to continuously see objects up close so as to notice a change in the patient/resident condition (breathing, color, skin breakdown, etc.). Ability to focus and read thermometers and other gauges and distinguish colors for warning lights.

2. Hearing:

Must be able to continuously hear normal sounds and voice patterns with some background noise. Must have adequate hearing to receive verbal communication by phone and in person. Must also be able to hear audible emergency signals, alarms and call light indicators.

Smell:

Must be able to detect the smell of smoke, spoiled food, soiled linen, residue of infections and appropriateness of patient/resident body odors.

COGNITIVE

1. Concentration:

Ability to concentrate on moderate details with frequent interruptions.

2. Attention Span:

Attend to a function from 10 to 25 minutes.

3. Conceptualization:

Must be able to understand and relate specific ideas and concepts.

4. Memory:

Must be able to remember multiple tasks and assignments over a period of up to twelve hours of a scheduled shift. Also, day to day assignment for continuity of care and application of procedure.

Responsibilities in an Emergency:

The RN is expected to respond to emergency situations involving the safety of patients/residents, other employees and the facility. This includes the ability to assist with a possible evacuation of patients/residents.
