Pay Grade: PTHRLY $35.00 per hour
Primary Purpose:
To operate semi-cab trucks to transport and deliver high school band equipment to a variety of locations throughout the school year.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
* High school diploma or equivalent
* Possess a valid commercial driver's license
* Obtain a Texas Commercial Driver's License with Passenger (P) and School(S) endorsements
* Must be at least 21 years of age
Experience:
* Minimum of five (5) years of Class A CDL driving experience
Special Knowledge/Skills:
* Ability to operate a semi-truck
* Ability to complete required driver safety training
* Professional radio communication skills
* Ability to read and understand documents, including policies and procedures manuals
* Ability to read maps/interpret directions for the assigned route
* Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
* Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
* Knowledge of Federal and State CDL driving regulations
* Meet State DOT physical fitness requirements
* Basic knowledge of the mechanical aspects of the specific vehicle driven, including routine maintenance and troubleshooting
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
* Communicate with band directors, school administrators, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth travel logistics.
* Have a flexible schedule and be available for extended trips, especially during the band's performance season.
* Drive a bus as needed, following assigned routes and adhering to established schedules.
* Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
* Follow assigned routes as directed.
* Perform pre-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure safe operation.
* Display professionalism in dealing with students, parents, staff, and the community.
* Approach problem-solving tactfully with directness and integrity.
* Exert a positive influence and work in harmony with associates.
* Respond to suggestions for improvement in a positive manner.
* Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems.
* Maintain a professional appearance.
* Be mentally and physically able to perform job functions.
* Manifest support for and compliance with Garland ISD's philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures.
* Follow district policies pertaining to the individual assignment.
* Seek professional growth through continuing education and staff development.
* Be consistent in route departure/arrival times at designated bus stops.
* Exercise responsible leadership when transporting school children.
* Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students.
* Report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator.
* Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
* Keep the assigned bus clean at all times.
* Perform all other duties as assigned.
Reports to: Transportation Route Specialist or Field Trip Supervisor

Tools/Equipment Used: Semi-truck; Maps and navigation devices; Two-way radio communication equipment; Pre-trip inspection tools (e.g., tire gauge, flashlight); Basic mechanical tools for minor repairs
Posture/Motion: Sitting for extended periods while driving; Maneuvering in and out of the truck cab and trailer; Reaching and stretching to access equipment and perform inspections
Lifting: Occasional lifting of band equipment, which may vary in weight
Environment: Exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow; Driving on highways, city streets, and rural roads; Potential exposure to loud noises
Mental Demands: Ability to remain alert and focused during long hours of driving; Decision-making skills to navigate traffic and adjust routes as needed; Problem-solving abilities to address unexpected challenges on the road; Stress management skills to handle tight schedules and unexpected delays
Physical Demands: Ability to sit for extended periods and maintain concentration while driving; stamina to handle long hours behind the wheel, including potential overnight trips; ability to enter and exit the truck cab and perform pre-trip inspections; these demands and factors are essential considerations for candidates considering the position of Class A CDL Truck Driver for High School Band Equipment.
